Best broadband?

I currently have Sky broadband which is extremely slow. I am having no success contacting them on the phone and when I do the tests on their website online I am told I need an engineer visit which costs £65 or is free if I renew for another 12 months. I am interested in switching to another provider and would be grateful for any recommendations please.

If there is a problem with the actual line then switching to another supplier that uses the same line likely won’t be any better.If you are in an area covered by Virgin, they use a separate cable for broadband rather than the phone line.

Some carp about it but I have been with BT for 20 years and have always found them to be reliable but Which magazine only classes them as average. I pay £29.99pcm for their Fibre 2 package which is one of their fastest.One other which is often broached is Plusnet (owned by BT but operate separately) who seem to be cheap and have a good reputation.

I believe broadband providers are required to provide you with a projected speed for your line/package and to account for a failure to meet it.This is a useful site to refer to for the legalities.https://www.ispreview.co.uk/new/complain/useful_consumer_rules_and_laws.phpI would check first what speed you're really getting by connecting a computer directly to your router using an ethernet cable. Too often people complain about slow internet speeds when what they really mean is slow wireless - which is a whole other can of worms and may or  not be the responsibility of the ISP.If you're in a Virgin area you're likely to find they are fastest - though customer service is pretty hit and miss. If you're restricted to using a legacyBT line (which is everybody apart from Virgin) Zen have a very good reputation for quality of service and customer relations.

Zen customer service is outstanding, and they support the telephone line.  We changed over to their service and certainly have not been disappointed - they take care of the actual change over as well which is a blessing !!! Having been with vodafone previously - Zen are the Rolls Royce

We are very disappointed with Sky Broadband at the moment - very slow and unreliable. I keep hearing they guarantee the speed they promise, but can't for the life of me seem to be able to dispute this... We also have Sky TV, so worried that changing to another supplier will make things a lot more expensive. Be good to get others views on this!

In general you will probably get a better price if you take phone + broadband + TV from the same supplier (and they will probably try and sell you mobile as well..!).Phone and broadband generally go together but more people are ditching their  home phone number and just using mobile.Depends really if price is the most important thing.  I've heard criticism of Virgin's TV box being sluggish and buggy compared to others.  I use them for broadband and it has generally been good and they have consistently upgraded the speed.

Like Janice, I'm with zen and I've been with them for telephones and broadband for over 15 years.  They're UK based and their service is remarkably good.  I think they've been the Which Best Buy for about 5 years on the trot.
