Let's look at the seven other countries in NW Europe compared to us, that's the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Ireland all with lower levels of obesity than us, and with higher levels of cycling. All of these countries have similar average incomes, we're 6/8, but it's the Netherlands and Belgium with the lower net incomes and we have 50% higher obesity.Very similar educational attainment, the UK is only behind Ireland in the PISA rankings 2/8, so if anything the education level and obesity appear positively correlated.Alcohol intake, we're in the middle, 4/8 - Luxembourg, Ireland and Germany higher, Sweden and the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium lower. So neither wealth, education or alcohol intake explain the high prevalence of obesity in the UK. In comparison, the low level of cycling does, and it's no big surprise that active transport would produce this effect. It's good to see the government recognise this simple fact.
