Closures of Turnham Green Terrace and Fishers Lane

It’s important to congratulate Hounslow and Ealing councils on the brilliantly integrated coordination and strategic planning that will see the simultaneous closures of both Turnham Green Terrace and Fishers Lane, the two key north-routes to Chiswick High Road for anyone living in or wishing to access the huge residential area between Acton Lane and Abinger Road. The residents of Prebend Gardens and the Bollo Lane area will be thrilled to have so many more cars queuing to turn eastbound only at the foot of Prebend Gardens and then pulling U-turns on King Street, or jamming up the whole area around Sainsbury’s. And the whole of north Chiswick will embrace the challenges of trying to go anywhere to the south. It’s a marvellous double whammy innovation and myself and my family can’t wait to enjoy the extra leisure time of sitting in huge queues and enjoying the contented smiles of fellow vehicle users, knowing that residents along these routes will be welcoming the additional traffic, noise and safety challenges that they too will  face.I’m proud to be paying my council tax to such forward thinking local authorities and I keenly suggest the further closure of South Parade (surely another massive safety risk to absolutely anyone who’s ever driven or crossed it), and perhaps even Chiswick High Road itself, known locally as Certain Death From Traffic At All Times Alley. That way the two councils can ensure they have finished the job they’re starting and ensure 18 hours a day complete gridlock.

Once again as Paul Green and others including our local Councillors seem to find this too complex a process to follow which necessitates tedious repetition: Councils have to submit schemes for approval to the DfT; the itemised tables of individual schemes have been  published with the results of the DfT's approval process; many schemes were rejected and some were only partially funded; these schemes in Chiswick were approved and funded; schemes that were rejected in other areas did not go far enough in restricting traffic. You can cry and moan at the "pro cycling chums" as much as you want. It won't change these facts.Everybody who is behind these policies (which is all key decision-makers that matter) fully expects there to be a lot of pearl clutching from people who are outraged at the loss of a small portion of their pivilege and also genuine fear from people who are scared of the long-term changes that the Secretary of State for Transport has signalled to improve the environment and public health. There are Paul Greens, David Lesniaks, Loraine Pembertons and Joanna Biddolph's saying exactly the same things in Wandsworth, Lambeth, Enfield, Hackney etc etc. Ad nauseam, anticipated and catered for in the ETO consultation process which ensures that everybody has a voice but that rationale and logic will be used to determine the future of these schemes rather than raw emotions and knee-jerk reactions. The people behind these policies have decided that they have the courage and political will to make real change happen for a better future. It is a shame that no local politicians in Chiswick are brave enough to stand up and be counted.

Claire,In this LOCAL forum you wrote "I support eliminating pollution, cutting down on car use etc, but these stupid measures are not the way to do it."I asked you "How would you suggest promoting cutting down on car use then Claire?" which is something that you said you support. My question to you wasn't answered by you, perhaps because you hadn't seen it, so I asked it again and added that I was interested in what you think would work. You replied "Certainly not by closing all but one route from North to South Chiswick, Andrew. " which I take as you expressing your opinion about something that you think wouldn't work , but it certainly wasn't answering my question.I don't think you are shy about giving your opinion, and I was genuinely interested in hearing from you what you think would work to cut down on car usage, something you've said you support.I asked you again, in a more direct way admittedly, to try and get an answer to my original question, but you still seem unprepared to answer. It seems odd that you aren't prepared to share your views, because from what I recall from other threads, you are often quite happy to share your opinions.I didn't mention anything about 'how to fix the world's problems'though others may have done. Why post on a local forum if you're not prepared to answer a simple question asking you about something that you wrote? If it's the LOCAL aspect that concerns you, then what do you think could be done locally to reduce car usage? Or is it something that we need other non-local people to do?
