Disposing of old mattress  - help

I've just taken delivery of a new mattress and need to legally get rid of the old one, can anyone please give me the heads up on who can do this for me ?Many thanks in advance.

Usually the people who sold you the new mattress will dispose of the old one for you. Since this is obviously not the case this time, assuming you're under Hounslow there's a bulky waste disposal service which currently costs £40 for up to 5 items including mattresses. I'm sure other boroughs operate a similar scheme.

I believe the bulky waste collection service will only collect from the doorstep, though I may be wrong as I can't actually find any reference to this on the website. There may be help available if you are old or infirm. Try calling  020 8583 5555. Frankly I don't know how people are supposed to move most mattresses anyway. I got a new one not that long ago and it takes two of us just to turn it. Next time (if there is a next time) I'll opt for one of the newer lighter brands rather than  a traditional Vi Spring.

Very difficult things to manoeuvre.I'd try your supplier just on the off-chance that you can get them to pick up and dispose of it even if you would normally make arrangements at the time of ordering the new one.  I know that with electrical goods this is sometimes offered.If it is in good nick you could offer it to someone else.One man's trash is another man's treasure.There is another new bulky waste service apparently now being offered by the West London Waste Authority for the same price as the Council.  Do make the phone call because they may have a better deal for mattresses.

To be honest, I'd be wary of suppliers offering to take your old mattress away when they deliver the new one. This effectively means that they are delivering new mattresses in the same vehicle at the same time as loading up other peoples old mattresses which may be contaminated with.......???

I believe they come with special zip up covers and although booked at the same time - delivery and collection may not be at the same time.

I ordered from Dormeo who don't provide that service, however I do need to get rid of it but I'd rather not enrich LB Hounslow's coffers. But the key factor for me is that it doesn't end up being fly tipped.

On the subject of mattresses.  I have a fully sprung double bed sized mattress that is very heavy and sits on a padded divan with 4 drawers.  It has done excellent service but has now reached the end of its life and is really sagging.  Is it successful to just buy a new mattress or do I have to buy the entire bed?    Year ago I had a Dunlopillo bed which I found unbearably hot and sticky so think new one cannot be foam.  Has anyone recently purchased a really supportive bed/mattress?

I don't have recent experience of any registered bulky waste collector.  I did notice that the WLWA appear to be using Any Junk a company with an elephant's trunk logo and their website looks interesting.I do wish that companies selling mattresses would provide a service including a mattress cover for the new mattress and an arrangement for removing and legally disposing of unwanted mattresses.

Jennifer I've just bought the Dormeo Octa Spring plus mattress which is apparently 3 degrees cooler than all other mattresses. Will update you tomorrow as to whether or not that's true.

Jennifer, we bought a Silentnight 5ft firm divan bed with drawers for a relative who was coming to stay and who had back problems.  After relative left we found the firm mattress just too firm so we just replaced it with a ViSpring mattress.  We have always used ViSpring and have been very pleased with them. I agree about the Dunlopillo - like sleeping in an oven! That was over 50yrs ago though.

Tbh can't say there was a noticeable difference in temperature, more importantly I didn't have a good nights sleep, but suspect I need to get used to this new harder mattress, will give it a month and review then. I've 60 days to decide whether or not it's a keeper.
