Trying to trace owner of black cat rescued from river by RNLI

A black cat was rescued from the Thames in Chiswick on Sunday 7th June and I'm trying to trace its owner.  A small black cat with no collar has been spending hours sleeping in our porch and sitting in our front garden.  It looks identical to the one which was rescued recently by the RNLI.  I also saw a fox just opposite our front door this morning, only a few metres away, so I want to make sure that this cat is kept safe.  We live near Chiswick Pier.  Can anyone help me with any information on the cat's owners please?  Many thanks, Carol

Many thanks for posting this Sarah.  Having looked at the photo in the article that you posted I'm now pretty sure that it is not the same cat.  The cat that I've been seeing, which may be "sleeping rough", has got yellow eyes (the rescued one, Merlin, has got green eyes).  The  black cat that I've been seeing also has a thinner face and is quite small (with no collar).  If anyone sees it I'd be really grateful if you could let me know on this forum, many thanks.

I can't seem to click on the link?

Jill Merrett ● 2322d

Hi Jill,I wasn't able to click on the link to Sarah Benson's post either, but when I pasted the link into the web browser it worked and I was able to read the article.  I now believe that there are 2 different black cats: Merlin, who was rescued from the Thames by the RNLI, and another black cat, which has been spending a lot of time in our front garden and which may or may not have an owner, but it is hungry,  thirsty and also vulnerable to foxes etc, so I'm trying to find out more info. If anyone has any info please let me know on this forum, many thanks.

Hi Carol, I still can't access the link! Was Merlin reunited with his owners? I do hope you find the owners of your little black cat. It's good that you're looking after it for the moment.

If you can get it to a vet they will scan for a chip

Hi Claire,Thanks for your message.Yes, that is exactly what I'm hoping to do: to take the cat to the vets to scan for a microchip and find out if there is an owner and, if so, to contact him/her. I haven't seen the cat for the last couple of days, so I've been asking people on this forum to keep a lookout for it and to let me know if they spot it.

Dear Jill,Yes, Merlin was successfully rescued in a lifeboat by the RNLI and has been reunited with his family.  He is now a local celebrity!

This could well be an unneutered tom that has strayed looking for a mate. If you manage to catch him then I can get him neutered for free. Are you feeding him Carole? If you can start feeding him then he'll keep coming back.

Thanks for your message Juliet.I have given this cat some food and so have several neighbours.  Some neighbours said that it was ravenous.  I haven't seen it for a few days now, which is why I tried using this forum.  I thought that someone might have some information about the cat, but no luck so far....

Thanks to those people who replied about the black cat last month.  Here is an update with very good news: a couple of weeks ago the cat reappeared and I took him to the vet.  It turned out that he is a stray and also an unneutered tom.  He had not been microchipped or vaccinated and he was not wearing a collar.  The vet thought that he was over a year old, possibly even 3 or 4 years old.  The cat has now been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and rehomed to a man who had been alone throughout lockdown.  Both the cat and his new owner are absolutely loving their new life together and couldn't be happier! Thanks to everyone for your interest and help.
