Dear Chiswick House, please open the loos

Dear Chiswick House,You need to open the loos.You shouldn't be running a café, selling a beer and coffee, and yet not opening the loos.I don't think I need to explain why.

Totally agree and I think it should be true for everywhere really...people need loos...and it is a place where you can wash your hands too.....

I totally agree. An article I e The I do during the week said how viruses are spread much more quickly in India, for example, where there is poor sanitation. So what do we do? Deprive the nation of sanitation. Bonkers.

Looked at another way, a venue will be expected to sanitize the facilities after each use. That would require a dedicated washroom attendant. Unlikely to happen with reduced ability to trade and continued overhead costs to navigate. And I can tell you from first-hand experience, you'd be surprised by what passes as individual hygiene under normal circumstances.

David’s response was interesting. He’s obviously much younger than I am. I remember when public loos did, indeed, have attendants who were responsible for keeping the premises clean. Does anyone else remember the public toilets opposite the Polish Centre that became a pizzeria? Clean to the point of gleaming. The attendant polished every copper pipe. It was a destination toilet for me as a new mother!  But, nostalgia aside, we should attach a price to public sanitation. Why not? It’s to the public benefit. It’s to the state’s benefit. A healthy public does not make needless demands on an overstretched and often abused national health system. So, please let’s have loos available to the public.

I think the law states that toilets should be provided if food and drink is being sold for consumption on the premises.As they are not open for consumption on the premises but take away the law does not apply, so they dont have to have the toilets open. I guess the toilets are supplied for cafe use and if you disagree then i guess dont visit the cafe until they open. If your using them becasue you visit the park and not the cafe,then to a point they dont have to supply toilets.

Perhaps if people are concerned they could volunteer to deep clean them and monitor them? Failing that save for closing the cafe to all it would be unfair to expect the cafe to bear their cost.

Julian, I agree they don't *have* to. I wasn't making a legal point, or talking about anyone's legal obligations. I was talking about common sense and responsible behaviour. On busy days the park is now full of people peeing behind nearly every tree and bush, made worse by the fact that the café is selling beer and coffee.I think it's irresponsible not to open the toilets, and doubly irresponsible to not open them and yet sell beer and coffee.There was a guy trimming the rhododendrons this morning. But if they are really short of budget, surely that can wait, and they can use the money to open the loos (I guess he could be a volunteer, but he didn't look like it).I'm not going to donate money until I'm convinced that they'll do something useful with it, and not just use it to trim the rhododendrons.

If people are so concerned about public health why do they happily leave all their litter and food waste everywhere?  When the bins are full in Chis House people just put their rubbish next to it or just leave it wherever they were picnicking.  When asked not to leave their rubbish next to the bin the other day a group of young girls  asked what they were meant to do with it, we suggested they take it home with them and dispose of it there but they just said ‘someone will clear it up’ . We have become a nation of slobs.

When you think about tbe attitude that you describe i.e. "someone else will clear it up" is exactly what has triggered climate change.

Actually, I think that the view that “Someone else will clear it up” has held back, rather than triggered, any sensible response to climate change. Apologies if I misunderstood your comment.
