Chris Fish Shop

Rather sad about the fire.  Do hope they have insurance so they can repair and open up again.Their fish and chips were always good.

It was always busy and still open for takeaways.Chris didn’t live in Chiswick and had to journey to and from every day until late.At one time he was looking for somewhere to live nearby but I haven’t seen him for a long time so maybe he’s retired now.It should certainly be insured so hopefully will be opening again.

Very sad to see this as not only a great local fish & chip shop with friendly staff but a local institute affected by recent pandemic rules too. Hope reopens and gets back all the support and customers. I for one will be returning for sure when it does

Very sad.  Let's hope they fry again! (An 'open' fishcake and chips was a regular post rehearsal treat!)  And thankfully nobody was reported injured in the fire.

The name confuses me, there used to be a very good fish and chip shop in Devonshire Road and the owners name was also Chris.It was a family run business with members of the family working in the shop.We used to eat in at least once a week and got to know the family that worked there.Then the news came through that Chris and all his family were selling the business and moving down to the south coast. The people who took over didn’t keep up the quality of The fish and chips so we moved to pastures new.The fish and chip shop in TGT  was known by another name at the time, which  surprised me when it was to referred to as Chris’s.Did Chris return to Chiswick ? Did the shop in Devonshire Road  close?

Chris TGT retired to Cyprus with loads of Wonga many years back . He may still own the freehold but unsure who operates the business now

Yes The original Chris left tears ago and I did t think it was ever the same.  On a matter of shopping locally, no one surely goes too far away for fish and chips !

When my daughter who is now living in Amsterdam where fish and chips aren’t the same, can’t wait to get to Chris and goes straight there from the station with all her luggage for one huge portion which is enough for both of us.At least the firefighters managed to swiftly contain the fire and it didn’t spread to the neighbours.

I suppose it all depends if you are going to eat in the premises or  take away.I live closed to one which is take away only at the moment. But if I am having a good day I can get to the one in Barnes High Street .

Last time i see Chris was about 2013 when he was around for about a year at best. Have not been for about 20+ years but i rememberSeashell in Lisson Grove being very good

The only reason I asked, there was a Chris and his family that ran the fish and Chip shop in Devonshire Road.Was there two Chris's? or did he owned both shops.But it seems that no one has lived here long enough to know about the shop in devonshire road.

I remember the fish and chip shop in Devonshire Road! I lived more or less opposite. I thought it was Chris's, only because I remember thinking he'd moved when Chris's appeared on Turnham Green Terrace. It was oh so long ago - from 1983 to 1990 - and I can't remember when it appeared on TG Terrace.

The Fish and Chip shop on Devonshire road was at the the junction of Devonshire road and Ashbourne road. On the same side as the Manor pub on the opposite side of that junction. That Fish shop dates back as far as the 1960's but I do not believe that it was connected in any way to the one in TGT. It was a real corner street shop of that time.

BernardI think your talking about the one that opened on devonshire road somewhere opposite La Trompette ? Was not open for very long. That was a family run fish bar,husband and wife but were british. Chris in TGT was Greek Cypriot.Not sure if this is true but i was told the owners of the new one on devonshire road won the lottery and that is why it did not stay open for long. If i remember,not millions but enough to stop trading. But i take that reason with scepticism. To much of the "someone told me"

JulianIn the early eighties the fish and chip shop in Devonshire Road was owned by a gentleman called Chris. He worked in the shop with his wife and two others of his family. I believe he was a local resident and British born. He finally sold the business as he wanted to move down to the south coast, but I don't know if he ever did move.The new owners didn't last very long, and for what ever reason the shop was closed down.I never went back or used the high road for shopping that much after that. Although It was the place to be in the sixties.I was part of a group of Mods in Chiswick; we used to hang out in the cellar of a coffee bar in Turnham Green Terrace called “Vee-Esta”. If we weren’t there we could be found out side the Steam Packet in Thames road, although we though nothing of taking a quick trip down to Brighton on a week day evening for fish and chips.

My son says that when he was in the TGT shop a while ago, he was told that the original proprietor had retired.

I’ve been living round the corner for 37 years. There have been 2 owners since Chris retired many years ago. The standard hasn’t been quite the same but does seem a bit better these days.

If I remember correctly, there was a fish and chip shop in Devonshire Road named 'Chiplins'. It was a few shops along from Chiswick Pets.

Chiplins! That rings a bell. And you describe the location roughly as I remember it and as is mentioned above - roughly opposite La Trompette.  I used to live above what is now La Trompette and remember a fish and chip shop more or less opposite me.

That's the name I was looking for.Great, that's two people that can confirm the chip shop was there.The owner of Chiplins was also a Chris who sold up and move to the south coast.I was beginning  to think it was a figment of my imagination.Thank you Ginny

Delighted that they have re-opened.  Perhaps the fire was an ill wind that did some good.  I certainly wish them all the best in these difficult times

It seems to have gone. Interesting to see when the outside fascia was being replaced that 48 years ago it was a shoe shop.

Great to see this Fish and Chip shop back open again pretty quickly after the fire.  Very much updated and looks nice and fresh. I walked by last night and decided to have a treat. The food is still great and even better now they are cooking more to order. Was speaking to the staff and they are glad to be back again to serve us Chiswick residents.  Come on everyone, get back to Chris' fish and chips and show your support and love for their food.

Thank you Jennifer. When the fascia board was being renewed I was going past on a bus but could see that the original was painted cream with the name in red italics so it was indeed Elias who moved over 40 years ago to 3 Chiswick Common Road. Now Elias and Grandsons with sons and daughters too.A shoemaker from Cyprus , Elias Stavrou, which would account for the map of Cyprus which was on the wall in Chris fish shop.chiswickcalendar.co.ukchiswickherald.co.ukThe mermaid and previous customers : - amongst others, Ant McPartlin, James May and Boris Johnson.
