Sophie Ellis Bextor

Why has Sophie Ellis Bed for using West middlesex Hospital at a time like this, surely with all her millions and the NHS still fighting the virus, she could have got a mini cab to the lovely private hospital built in Chiswick of which most of us could never afford and use some of her own money instead of added burden to our NHS, I am aware Sophie that most have been unable to work over last three months but I very much doubt using a private hospital would have dented your millions

An emergency ambulance would always take you to an NHS hospital, surely?  Who cares how much money she has if she needs emergency treatment. Especially as A&E has been radically underused since Covid-19.

You can't win in these circumstances. If you go private -- be it health care or educating your children -- then you're wrong because you're buying privilege; if you use public provision ... then you're wrong because you're taking up precious resources.

I agree Susan. I use private for non elective surgery and thereby alleviate the burden on the NHS. I’ve put a lot of money into the tax system over the years and have used the NHS for emergencies. But with some folk you just can’t win ...........

What an inappropriate post. Sophie is as entitled as anyone else to NHS treatment.  Have enjoyed her Friday night discos throughout lockdown. Wish her a speedy recovery. If there is anything to mention, it would appear from the nature of her head injury she was not wearing a helmet. I have seen so many novice cyclists and families on the streets with no helmets. Our son was knocked off his bike recently by an inconsiderate driver, his helmet split in two as a result of the impact. He only suffered minor injuries but without a helmet it could have been far more serious.

If you can afford to buy private health care for your family and enjoy a quicker and more comfortable service - why not?  You are contributing to the economy and taking some burden off the NHS so that hopefully those less fortunate can also enjoy a less overstretched service.  Its a win, win for everyonebecause the taxpayer doesn't have to pay for us all when we elect to go private.

Sean, couldn't agree more about helmets.I am an experienced cyclist but was knocked off by another rider. Just one of those things but the other bloke was most concerned and insisted that an ambulance was called.One promptly arrived and I was checked over. The paramedic said it was just as well I was wearing a helmet or things could have been very different.As it was I was OK and the crew took me home by ambulance along with my bike. Brilliant.

The more pertinent point is that she shouldn’t have been cycling on the towpath anyway - it is a NO cycling route which is signposted as such. It’s too narrow to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians let alone social distancing...did a pedestrian stand their ground, hence the crash?? As a local she would surely know it’s a no-go for cyclists.

On the towpath side theres a slopedown to the foreshore along with shrubbery to lessenany fall. I've seen no mention of Strand on the Green anywherein any published account. Fair point, Michael.  I must admit that I took a rather Chiswick-centric view in interpreting Julian's lat/long reference.  Although the towing path in the old days probably was on the south bank, the word 'towpath' is often used these days to refer to any path on the banks of a river or canal.Perhaps Julian can explain how he knows where the accident happened and which bank it was on?

A silly woman for cycling where she shouldn't have.  OP quite dotty insisting she should have gone to private clinic on C.Hi Rd instead of by ambulance to  NHS West Mid Hospital.  For a start the clinic on the Hi Rd does not have beds and has been closed for several weeks because of the pandemic.  The NHS is for EVERYONE of whatever shade and gender.
