Coronavirus (COVID-19): changes to MOTsThere are some changes to MOT tests because of coronavirus (COVID-19). How this affects you depends on when your MOT is due to expire.29 March 2020 or beforeYou must book an MOT as usual unless either: you or someone you live with has coronavirus symptoms you’re extremely vulnerable to the virusYou must stay at home (self-isolate) if either of these situations apply - do not take your vehicle for its MOT.Follow the guidance for what to do if your MOT runs out. From 30 MarchYour MOT will be automatically extended for 6 months because of coronavirus.ExampleYour vehicle’s MOT was due to expire on 3 April 2020.This will automatically be extended to 3 October 2020. You will need to get your MOT by this date.Read the DVSA guidance to find out: how to keep your vehicle safe to drive how to check your new MOT expiry date when to tax your vehicle what do to if your vehicle failed its MOT before 30 March 2020https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot

Thank you so much for that info. I was going to ask my daughter who is a named driver to take my car in. Is that permitted or should I extend MOT until December '20?

Most garages do seem to be open so you can if you like get your daughter to take it in or wait until December (or before then) - the extension is automatic so you don’t have to tell anyone.

My car was MoT'd a couple of weeks ago by Capital Motors, an excellent outfit that I've used for years.Access to their premises will NOT be disrupted by changes to Devonshire Road

Can't see the point in getting your MOT unless you really feel that your car may be unsafe. The guidance clearly states "From 30 March - Your MOT will be automatically extended for 6 months because of corona virus."The more you allow people to touch your possessions the more you risk spreading the virus. And people wonder why we have the third highest death rate in the world. I am also astounded at how many people are now getting their cars washed and valeted inside and out. Not surprisingly the second wave of Covid-19 is due Oct / Nov according to scientists on R4 this morning.

Hi AllThe sting here is you must make sure your vehicle is safe to drive (‘roadworthy’). It can be unsafe even if your MOT expiry date has been extended.I.e if you were to have an accident during the extended period and your car was discovered to be unroadworthy, this may effect your insurance.Scroll to the bottom.https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-mots-for-cars-vans-and-motorcycles-due-from-30-march-2020#vehicle-safety
