Fuller's Boss Says Pubs Can't Operate With Two Metre Distancing

Pubs and restaurants exist only to bring the public together and keep them close together: certainly closer than 2m apart and for more than 15 minutes and in confined spaces particularly in winter. They are certainly much too dangerous now for anyone over the age of 60 or overweight or with diabetes and/or a lot of other medical conditions. It is the same problem for the airlines and all public transport. I can't see any opportunity to re-open these types of businesses until either a medicine or a vaccine becomes available. In addition the UK has now introduced quarantine for 2 weeks for all overseas visitors (with fines for breaking it), so there will be few foreigners coming to London. I honestly think that it will be up to a year before people forget the fear of catching this very infectious virus. Pubs are the last places that will be given permission to re-open and rightly so.

2m distancing, perspex screens at the bar and between tables, thermal imaging cameras to check patrons’ temperatures, sanitiser everywhere, no cash etc. As you say, pubs exist to bring people together, and in a relaxed pleasant environment, but the purpose of the ‘new normal’, the phrase of which was introduced at the beginning of the 'crisis' by the dark suits, is to isolate people. Pubs are finished.

You won’t be allowed to sit at the perspex screened bar, Roger; so you’ll have to move into a perspex booth. You’ll be able to see Lord T and his lips moving, but there’ll be no sound. Face masks may be mandatory, so worth purchasing some special drinks masks with zips/caps/straw holes in advance. Police will visit with tape measures to check on social distancing, so watch your distance or pay a hefty fine.  No cash – you can touch chairs, tables, menus, glasses, plates, cutlery, condiments etc. but hand someone some cash and you’ll likely kill them. Also, check with staff that the air con is switched off otherwise coronavirus will be circulating and recirculating throughout the booths until you pass out.

I can think of nothing better than a quiet pub or restaurant with a few people dotted about having a relaxing drink or meal. I've never seen the attraction of being jammed shoulder to shoulder at the bar trying to get served, or sitting elbow to elbow trying to eat.

Sometimes Steve I don't know if you're being serious or taking the p*ss.One could equally argue that by delaying opening up the hospitality sector and by continuing both the furlough scheme and the similar self-employed support scheme until September/October, the government is encouraging people to loaf around at home doing nothing other than getting boozed up at the taxpayers future expense, which is just as likely (arguably more so) to destroy families than going to the pub.Where's this evidence about a second wave in this or any other country ? - inevitably there have been little pockets/clusters of new infections in country, but from everything I've read/seen (which is quite alot, and not a Daily Mail 'scare' story to fit in which whichever group of the population the Mail deems the most worthy of its support on that particular day) there's no evidence whatsoever from any other country that relaxing its lockdown has led to a genuine 2nd wave.

You might be right but no other country, as far as I am aware, has lifted restrictions when the R rate is still so high and without  proper trace and tracking system. And we are still at Level 4.

I'm not quite sure from his posts on this thread, but is Herr Brown suggesting that the new regulations will make it less likely that he's going to go back to the pub as and when they re-open?If so, then the reduced likelihood of my having to share the same space as him would make the necessary restrictions on my own first visit just that bit more tolerable and my first pint that bit more enjoyable.In fact, I might even raise that pint in a toast to Bill Gates!"Every cloud has a silver lining..."

Oh come on Steve, anyone can pretty much google anything and find either a news story or an opinion that supports any theory, be it a 2nd wave of Covid-19, the earth being flat, 9/11 being faked and so on.Whereas looking at the coronavirus stats for places like Germany, Spain, Italy and many others shows a relatively consistent decline in new cases and deaths, and no evidence of any kind of sustained 2nd wave since their respective lockdowns.  People tried to suggest that their was a spike after the VE Day celebrations, which again isn't supported by the data.As I heard the other day, ask 2 scientists for their opinion on something and you'll get 3 different answers.

Possibly you watched C4 news where UCL’s prof Patel explained quite eloquently why the government scientists are wrong. We should be far from    easing the lockdown. Oxford professors agree. The government is making political decisions and ignoring the science. It’s obvious to most people.

No I didn't, after all none of us can watch everything.Thoughts on Spain reporting 0 deaths today or the general pattern across Europe of such a rapid drop in cases/deaths over recent weeks ?.  Or the Italian scientists who are saying that the virus is losing its potency ?.  Conversely, Iran seems to be experiencing a significant second wave.  Is there anything to be learnt from that ? (having never been to Iran I haven't got a clue just how different life there is to any 'western' country).Loathe as I am to support/defend the UK government, at some point measures need to be eased and the consequences of that easing assessed.  And sadly, inevitably that carries risks, but there is a balancing act that needs to be made between that risk and the economic impact.

It is insulting when they are making purely political decisions and hiding behind the mantra of being guided by the science. They aren’t. They are being guided by political will.
