Greg Wallace last night

Fascinating program on toilet paper manufacturing last night.I never realised before that there was a right side and a wrong side to use this indispensable product.

There a two plies to the paper. When rolled the outer ply is an absorbent pulp from Swedish conifers whose qualities are softness and absorbency. The inner ply is a coarse pulp from South American conifers whose quality is strength. Both needed to perform the essential function. If when on the holder the paper hangs down on the room side, it is the facing side that should be used for the essential function. If the back is used, in extremis, one could risk splinters !!

I was so poor when I moved to London and into an Earls Court bedsit that I only had a calendar to use as toilet paper.Thankfully, those days are now behind me.

My Dad used to bring home ‘government’ loo paper. It was very painful 😂

I'm old enough to remember when loo roll, particularly in public places such as schools and offices, consisted of a single thickness, shiny on one side and rough on the other, and prone to tearing at crucial moments. Even the still much-used newspaper was preferable to that disgusting stuff!

Ah yes, I remember it well, Georgina. Hard and slightly shiny, with Government Property stamped on each sheet. Schools also used similar paper. As I recall, there were two main brands of hard paper — Izal, in individual sheets which smelled of disinfectant, and Bronco, on a roll, which we dubbed broncosaurus (geddit!) in school.

I can remember a time when, as far as I knew, all loo paper was shiny.  Jeyes sticks in my mind.  For those of a musical bent you could fold it round a comb and belt out the latest hits from the likes of Dickie Valentine and Alma Cogan.  Apparently this was unhygienic!

I used to use shiny lavatory paper and a comb at school to make tunes - great fun. Only unhygienic if you had used the paper for it's original use first. I tended to use clean pieces :-)

Good for use as tracing paper, we had the Government property one as well. My dad was nothing to do with anything remotely government work.

We should all give more than a crap about informative threads like this...In case we end up with a bum deal at the shops..The bottom line is:-  did Gregg identify a splinter-free brand of loo roll?

When I was younger I used to favour a Star Trek themed toilet tissue.It was particularly good at flying around Uranus, wiping out Klingons...

The Uranus joke brings back hilarious memories of Round the Horne. How much of the humour would be possible these days? All that bona stuff with Jules and Sandy!
