Handel — a wonderful composer for singers. All his operas are full of absolute showstoppers. How about Lascia ch'io pianga from Rinaldo. The Joyce DiDonato recording for German TV is exquisite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJJnhp2CYnk Patricia Petibon is wonderfully affecting too in the Lisbon recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5WUO7hsgCA), but the silly hat's a great distraction!

There is simply so much. I only got to grade 5 violin and O level music at school but joined both the university choir and orchestra as well as one of the mid-Herts and Cambrige University orchstras. Have been a member of many local choirs for many years now.  It has been a musical education.  I guess some of it depends whether you like instrumental music or operatic (or both).  But a lot of ballet music is regarded with contempt.  Personally  I love the score for Giselle and think it is underrated.

Good pick, Stuart.Forget the singing. Jones's Maddalena is a donna molto sensuale!

Thank you Robert. Joyce and Patricia with the hat were great and I hope that others have listened in!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_gCwie22C8wVery interesting to hear of your musical activities. Yes, I too enjoy Giselle and the link above is not the best musical recording but old Chiswickian Natalia Makarova performs.Re local choirs. I loved attending St Paul's Church in Grove Park for a performance of Brahms Requiem last year. What better way to spent ones 80th!

Stuart."Ode to Le Tortoise" !I laughed and laughed at that suggestion...in the middle of listening to serious arias!

yesterday was very good.  I was working so only caught bits of it unfortunately but it was a dip into a mix of lots of types of music.  A programme which will lead you to follow up on singers and musicians that interest you.https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08j8j2l
