The recycling centre reopens on Monday for essential trips. What constitutes am essential trip?

I think Ealing's view of essential is similar to Hounslow's (and everybody else's)There will be very limited throughput in these centres because of the need to ensure social distancing. We (LBH) will only allow 2 cars at any time at Space Waye. Richmond have the additional problem that access is shared with the Crem, which is also a bit busy at present.So if you've got stuff in your garden that's been sitting there for years and you've got round to clearing it because you have had nowt else to do... leave it for another few months.In fact, only go to the waste sites is you've got stuff that's getting offensive due to decay or seriously getting in the way of normal life.There's a real fear that people have been clearing out the attic during lockdown and will proceed to the tip at the precise time when we really can't cope with much volume.

Now is a great time to consider composting to reduce your garden waste and put goodness back into the soil.  This will help your garden soil absorb more water when we have sudden heavy showers and reduce run off and flooding.  There are many different ways of doing this nowadays.  You could just investigate or try bokashi bins, hotbins, green cones, green johannas and wormeries (you won't recognise some of the smart ones as being wormeries).  Go to www.getcomposting.com and see what is on offer (and look for Council reductions).  There may also be water butts. See if you can borrow or rent a shredder. Using one will significantly reduce the volume of garden waste.

Well said Guy , that’s exactly the case with us. Stuff we’ve had for ages, we can hang on to for a bit longer.  It’s the people dumping stuff in the street who need to have a word with themselves 🤔

Agreed Maggie. Though contrary to myth flytipping has not increased in Hounslow. Mind you it was already, and remains, far too high, completely unnecessary and a blight on the landscape.

Speaking of bokashi bins I have two in good order which I no longer need, plus a bit of the bran which goes with them.  Please PM me if interested and be prepared to collect.  For those who wonder what a bokashi bin is - The bokashi bin is a Japanese system that pickles your waste (bokashi means fermentation) and is perfectly suited to small spaces. You need two bins (they can be kept indoors) and special bran inoculated with good bacteria. In goes all your cooked and uncooked kitchen waste and a sprinkle of the magic bran. I live in the Ealing borough part of Chiswick and it certainly feels worse here.  I wonder if it’s just that I’m walking more and therefore seeing this I might not have seen when driving.

Out of interest, when people leave things on their walls, or directly outside their property, within the expectation that someone will take them away, is that fly tipping? Over the years we have left things outside (as have all the neighbours) ranging from chests of drawers, office chairs, bikes, CDs, books - all of which have been taken. I always saw it as recycling and very convenient but technically, I suppose it is fly tipping. Obviously,if things aren’t taken then people will take them to the recycling centre.

Don't bother going there. It'll be chaps. The staff are grumpy enough as it, they're going to be 10 times worse. Firstly because they've had to come back to work and secondly they'll have queues to deal with.

Can't speak for Ealing but nobody in Hounslow will be 'coming back to work' because they've all been working throughout, bar three 'vulnerables' in our recycling contractor who have been furloughed. Front line workers like virtually all of those in recycling and waste have been working extra hard, dealing with a great deal more waste than normal and putting themselves at risk every day.In fact, despite some people self-isolating and some in the vulnerable category, overall work attendance rates have been higher than normal. These teams are going the extra mile to help keep the rest of us safe and sane. There was absolutely no grumpiness on display amongst the staff at Space Waye yesterday despite long queues. Traffic was well controlled and quite a number of people recycled themselves by going off for a cup of coffee and coming back later when the queues were shorter. It seems that queues were similar across West London - 1 to 2 hours after the initial rush.

Hello All, I live in a flat in Corney Reach Way and only have access to cardboard recycling on site (my green bin was stolen years ago and never replaced).  In pre-coronavirus days, I collected all other recycling and took it to the bins at Sainsbury's.  I now have a cupboard full of plastic,tin cans, paper and bottles. Does anyone know if we can still recycle at Sainsbury's?

That would be interesting to know.  Anybody?Can you order a new bin online or are you someone who is no longer eligible for recycling bins?Can you share with a neighbour?  There is usually another way around any challenge!  Minimising the volume of cans/boxes/plastic bottles by squashing/flattening them makes a big difference.

Thank you Philippa.Guy emailed me so hopefully I will get my own bins.  Oddly, I haven't noticed the neighbour's bins.  It is something to think of.

Hurray!  Wish more people were as proactive.  We passed by Greenford Reuse & Recycling this afternoon.  There was a huge queue and it looked like questions were being asked/waste checked before entry.  It is supposed to be sorted first to speed up the process. Simpler to either wait a while or repurpose/find a new owner instead.  You can do a no contact collection using www.trashnothing.com

Walking the dog past the Kingston recycling centre entrance...the guy with the double barrelled Purdey said that only refuse trucks were allowed in until 2 p.m. then after that you had to have applied for a slot on line.Ho hum, a slot to get stuff in(god bless Waitrose), a slot to get it out , a slot to live, a slot to die? Under the wide and starry sky, dig my grave(aka slot) and let me lie, subject to slot allocation.
