In simple terms, how does it actually work Christopher? Or should I look at the app for more explanation. What do you reckon the optimum number of users is to provide meaningful data? More than happy to join if this provides the boffins with what they need.

It works by large numbers of people reporting everyday whether they are well or have covid symptoms.  These reports are then subject to detailed statistical analysis to calculate the actual number of infections.  For those interested the web site contains explanations of some of the calculations.  I recommend the podcasts on there, but they are quite long.  The results are reported to the chief medical officer daily and published on a weekly basis.  These give advanced warning of the likely level of hospital admissions a fortnight before they happen and show the areas of the country where they can be expected.  They are getting good information from the two and a half million people they already of the App but would like to increase this to five million.
