Plant A Vegetable

85% of our vegetables are imported from Europe Even if things dramatically improve, we may not be getting what we are used to come the summer.With all this extra time stuck at home why not…PLANT A VEGIf you co-ordinated with neighbours, you don’t need to grow anything more than 1 veg.So No1 grows Courgettes/ No2 Runner Beans etc….Certain veg are easier to grow than others. And anyone who’s ever grown veg knows that you always end up with too much -so why not share.Veg planting time starts now and next coule of month and harvesting in June/July could make a perfect Summer Harvest Festival or spring vge for your street? It won't put the veg man out of business but might to help us to keep occupied and have some fun (and not all go mad)?What better way to stay social but keep isolated?You never know it might even be something that our Blitz spirit local councillors and Abundance warriors could agree on?! (…maybe too much to hope )Just an idea.

M&S have been giving out seeds embedded in paper.  I have collected carrots, green chilli, beetroot and basil.  I will put them in a window box now that the sun is coming round and see what my green fingers can do.

What are the easiest veg to grow in pots and boxes on my veranda?  Perhaps won't look as pretty as geraniums but needs must!  I'm not able to do much bending and lifting so b7ckets of spuds are probably a step too far.

Excellent Elizabeth & thanks for tip on M&S.btw I gave a misleading fact. We do not import 85% of our Veg from Europe - 85% of our veg importscome  from Europe ...we only import about 50% of our total Veg.Still a scary number though,. I know this forum likes accuracy!

Jennifer - herbs and lettuce are excellent for window boxes. But in containers on a veranda you could plant almost anything. Why not tomatoes? - they're easy to grow and I like the scent!

Jennifer Courgettes are easy to grow but they need quite a large container. Regarding potatoes they're super to grow, maybe just try one container.

I saw a window box with some raspberries in it for sale the the other day in a Morrisons.I think everybody should try and grow some herbs.  You can grow potatoes in specially made bags.  Last year we grew a courgette plant in a pot (it was a particular kind suited to that).Blackcurrants are a great fruit to grow because the fruit is so strong you can use just a handful with some apple.There is a Swiss chard with fluorescent coloured stems which we have found successful.  Two different veg on one plant - the leaf and the midrib and you can use a bit at a time.  The Swiss chard worked better than the spinach which  was eaten I'm told by mice but I think pigeons rather like it as well.From the emails I've received recently I notice that it is time to plant strawberries.  You have to remember that we are not the only ones to love strawberries as William Morris showed us and if you have only a few you may have to share!
