They have amended their priority shopping so that the NHS staff and elderly customers don’t go into the shop at the same time.

Good morning, all, a beautiful day and under normal circumstances I would be looking forward to a nice walk down the towpath but today, sadly not. We are living in extraordinary times and some people have lost their marbles or just don't give a sh!t about others. We can't blame the supermarkets for the food shortage, the blame lies with all the selfish morons who have bought more food than they needed and should all be ashamed of themselves. Yesterday I was able to buy a bag full of fresh provisions enough to last another 3-4 days. So calm down people and thank you the hard working people at Sainsburys. Oh happy Mother's Day.

I share everybody’s horror at the mad stockpiling and other misbehaviours we have seen recently but I would like to ask why it is that so many do behave like this?  Is it just human nature or is it possibly to do with the way our society’s values have changed over the years?  There is a widely held mistrust of politicians going back at least to the expenses crisis and in both the U.S. and the U.K. a lot of people seem unbothered by repeated blatant lies put out by leaders.  They accept it as the new normal, so assurances about the continued availability of goods are simply not believed.

It's interesting isn't it?  People always cite WW2 as being the pinnacle of selfless behaviour - the blitz spirit.  But they overlook the fact that everything was strictly rationed - food, clothes, petrol.  And there was STILL an enormous and thriving black market for those who either knew someone useful, or could pay exorbitant prices.  So people were probably no different then, just had fewer opportunities to act.

I agree. And I think ‘Blitz spirit’ is a dishonest slogan used for dubious political ends.  But there are huge cultural differences between the U.K. in the ‘40s and ‘50s and now and I’m wondering whether aspects of how we live now, what we value, who we trust etc lies behind a lot of some dangerous and irrational behaviour that we see, people still gathering in groups, stockpiling etc.  I have no answers, just questions.
