Excellent advice Philippa (and I assume you don't only mean during Lent ha ha).Meanwhile, I was astounded to read recently that UK households waste a staggering 490 million pints of milk a year, equivalent to 18 1/2 pints per household!https://resource.co/article/crying-over-spilt-milk-150m-worth-milk-wasted-every-year-12939We drink a fair amount of milk in our household, but can hardly ever recall having to throw any out - maybe the bottom of a bottle every few months (max)? This is because we buy milk almost daily, in smallish quantities (it's readily available everywhere) and are careful to choose bottles with the longest Use By dates. And I guess our fridge must be set at a low temperature, which is important. Remember, too, that the lower the fat content, the longer it keeps.Anyhow, the above link gives some tips on avoiding the wastage of milk (you can freeze it btw), as well as containing another link within for avoiding food waste generally.
