Rubbish removal

Have just cleared our shed and have 20 odd years of wood, old paint pots, plant pots etc. (No rubble or soil) to be collected. It’s not heavy and can be collected from front garden.Also a king size divan base and mattress to go ....Recommendations please 🙂

We had the same things to deal with a few weeks ago for the same reason, and my wife and I managed to get it all in the back of the car and made a few trips to the Mortlake 'dump', where they were very helpful.  Our local dump in South Acton might have taken some of it, but one can never be sure.  Greenford dump certainly takes everything, but if it looks too much like DIY debris, or in our case, the old smashed up shed, they might charge you to take it.

One man's trash in another man's treasure.  Nowadays we are supposed to sort our rubbish so that as much as possible is reused before its end of life.  Some things like paint and fluorescent strip lights are considered to be hazardous waste.  We are working towards a circular economy.www.trashnothing.com for things that someone might want - including wood pieces, flower pots etc.  Take a look as you will see what is on offer and what is wanted.For small pieces of furniture that need a bit of TLC there is also Petit Miracles in W12 where they upcycle and do courses in using tools (and so do some mending).  We recently discovered this to be useful when the British Heart Foundation turned some down. Take a look a their website:  petitmiracles.org.ukYou can expect all of those to collect.www.westlondonwaste.gov.uk  has lots of info.  Hounslow's website has some too.Take a look at the websites for the nearest Household Waste & Recycling Centres or sometimes now called Reuse & Recycling Centres to see what they have listed that they can take.Unsorted rubbish costs much more to dispose of.

Thanks to all ... have spent the day back and forth to the Acton recycle centre. Found a home for old table and chairs and donated toys and footballs etc to neighbour. Just the mattress and divan which sadly is over twenty years old and no use to anyone. Is Hounslow council collection service best option for this ?

Another whole "take" on disposing of unwanted goods is through the likes of Home Store in E15 (don't muddle up with other organisations with same name). They have a warehouse of items in E15 for sale to people in dire circumstances who can prove they live in certain east end boroughs. Money is provided by charities like the Society for the Relief of Distress for them to buy things. Home Store itself is a charity raising money for their charitable purposes too. It's almost a win win win win situation if it wasnt for the difficulty of getting items delivered from Chiswick to the east end.

You can dispose of mattresses at town mead road. Possible bed too bu I would call them on that.

We've found that many charities are quite picky about what they'll take.  After a lot of ringing round, we were still left with a sofa because it had slightly faded in the sun, which I guess is understandable if they want to sell it to make money.  I'm afraid I can't keep worrying that there must be a youth club somewhere in the world that would find it useful - and nobody wants old mattresses.  So in the back of the car it all goes and round to Mortlake, which seems to be the most efficient way of getting rid of things.

That is precisely why websites like freecycle and trashnothing are so useful. There are people who are desperately in need of something for its use and not just for its looks.  The difference between the haves and havenots has grown.  On trashnothing you post a picture and list what you are giving away and whoever is interested has to contact you - and if they want it they take it away.  The same sort of thing happens with freecycle.We successfully managed to re-home some small pieces of furniture needing a bit of TLC turned down by the British Heart Foundation and they were then picked up by www.petitmiracles.com who will mend and refurbish/upcycle them.  We came to the conclusion that the BHF collection service for second hand furniture has become so successful that they can afford to be more fussy. There is always a question of space with charity shops too.A 20 year old divan and mattress should I would have thought have fire labels the absence of which will also mean they are not saleable.  You can find refurbished furniture on Gumtree and Ebay.  It always depends with a mattress how clean it is and how much it has been used. I wish that all mattresses were sold with covers as a matter of course - it would save a lot of accidents.  It is always better to find a home for something with someone who wants it.
