How bad is James O’Brien?

I don’t listen to LBC much - only when there’s a particular news event that I’m interested to hear views on, so I’ve tuned in a few times over recent months to hear what’s being said about Brexit; and our James is so bad, it’s unbelievable; he spends the first 20 minutes talking to himself – bigging himself up and patting himself on the back before the first caller is allowed on. Now, we all know that the nation is divided over Brexit – it’s about 50/50, yet when the discussion is about Brexit, almost every caller that comes on agrees with James, who is an avid Remainer, and we get a load more back patting, this time shared back patting. Occasionally, someone who is in favour of Brexit slips through the net and James goes mad, and they’re soon cut off. It’s so blatant, I think he’s doing a better job for the LEAVE camp. I texted him in the week and told him this to try and help him but I don’t think he’s taken any notice.

Michael's right. Whatever the topic, O'Brien's programmes consist largely of rambling, virtue-signalling diatribes interspersed with the occasional phone-call when he deigns to allow a listener to interrupt him. He is also extremely liberal and non-judgemental until he mentions 'older people'. Since he takes it as a given that they all voted for Brexit, he stereotypes them in a particularly vicious and sneering fashion that he would never dream of using against other groups in society. Classic posh boy turned super-liberal.

You mean the referendum where pretty much all the polls showed a narrow remain lead, but overall well within the margin of error? Or are you talking about YouGov and one or two others who showed the Tory lead eroding through the course of the GE campaign and were predicting a hung parliament about 10 days out? Obviously polls are not 100% accurate  expecting them to be so is naive and unrealistic, they are only ever a snapshot indicating the direction of travel. Where they did definitely get it wrong was the 2015 GE but their methodology has been improved since then. But I’ve noticed that people only really rely on polls when they reinforce an existing position.

He no longer presents Newsnight, thank goodness, because he is totally unsuited to a televisual format. He hasn't the faintest idea how to dress in a situation that requires him to change from his scruffy, unkempt look that he is so fond of. I did once see him on Newsnight (once too many), wearing a suit that was so ill-fitting he looked ludicrous. The other problem of course, is his head is too far up his leftie backside.

Having been a LBC listener for 36 years i can safely say JOB is the first and only person i turn off now. Ever since the  referendum its daily from him on Brexit.It is not exactly him or Brexit but he makes those who are maybe not so clued up look stupid and very much on purpose for his listeners who back him and possibly himself. It is just to much for me and therefore MR JOB has become the very first LBC presenter who get the dump button. He obviously has the ratings for his slot otherwise he would have been told to change the discussion more often. As to newsnight, he does not fit on TV for me. Too stiff in all departments and watching him kind of made myself feel unconformable watching. Saying all that,other debates before blooming Brexit were listenable but it will be some time before we get back to that stage in debate.

For balance, I always enjoy JOB's LBC show. He's also local and will no doubt see this thread. He's approachable, humble, and fair. Brexit aside, how can you reject Mystery Hour? It washes the world away and brings a lot of people together. I don't watch TV so I couldn't comment on that.

Me too but maybe i should have said i switch off between 10-12. Other debates with JOB are good and Mystery Hour is good. "humble, and fair" Only if your intellectual and on par in agreement. If your not your either not get on air or have a fair crack of the whipp before being made to sound stupid on purpose or being cut off. That is not an open radio phone in. On Brexit the barriers are down unlike any other presenters on any radio station. You do not put your listener down because of own beliefs,its open debate for the listeners to contribute not the presenter to have an agenda with barriers. You can have a view and challenge but not make you look stupid and thick or not good enough to carry the call through.

It's the bloke who was on at 5pm before Eddie Mair took over that used to get me. That self opinionated wining voice!!! Ughhh. Don't know his name because he was / is a non entity.  Eddie is great though. Always listened to him on R4 and again Evan Davis on Newsnight - waste of time. Loved his own voice and never allowed people to answer. Always had the answer himself.  Not surprising he struggled to get anyone except has-beens on the show. The the prize for most irritating git has to go to Nick Robinson on R4 Today.  Bring back Sarah Montague and give the program a bit of class again. I am now forced to listen to Nick Ferrari whenever Nick Robinson is on R4.

I don't actually mind John Humphrys.  I suspect the decline could be because of Nick Robbins?? In fact Humphrys doesn't seem to on very often these days but I guess if they brought back Sarah Montague they may get an increase. I found it quite disgusting that Mishal Husain is paid so much more than Sarah.  And Nick Robbins salary is quite ridiculous.

I did enjoy listening to JOB... until the day after the Brexit result. He has since been a conceited bore. EVERY programme is the same. You can hear his brain working out how to move the call onto Brexit, to enable him to sound off on the stupidity of Leave supporters. I tried for a while, in the hope he would change. I no longer listen to LBC when he's on.Imagine what he will be like when Parliament decides to defy the democratic will of the people, and demand a second referendum which will be designed to split the Leave vote.

Yes, Leave voters voted to leave the EU. But TM says her deal means we do leave the EU, but don't really, while the option of no-deal also means we leave the EU, but no MPs want that. So, a 2nd referendum which asks TM's deal, No deal, or Stay in the EU, will see some Leave voters opting for TM's deal as the more palatable 'leave' option, while some will go for no deal, and the 48% will vote to scuttle back to the welcoming arms of Junker & co. End of Brexit. TM's job is done! Next stop; EU President when she's rightly kicked out of UK politics (unless Blair gets there first!).

Surely the problem (as I know all leave voters understood back in 2016) is that it will either be some form of compromise arrangement to retain access to the single market and customs union … or it is the hardest possible leave and suddenly be outside all elements of the EU. You did understand this when you voted leave didn't you? And you do understand now that if we totally and immediately leave the impact will be devastating? Don't tell me you believed all the leave campaign lies about how easy a deal would be? Please don't disappoint me and everyone by admitting you thought the "they need us more than we need them" rationale had any substance? I'm tired of hearing Brexiteers complaining that they've been betrayed. We remainers feel just as betrayed. After all, the Cameron administration failed to put checks in place to avoid exactly the sort of divisive situation that occurred, in which a decision of monumental constitutional (not to mention economic) importance was decided on a very slender margin. According to the government's position before the referendum, no such safeguards were necessary, because the process was "only consultative". In complete and perfidious contrast, May now promotes the notion that she is duty-bound to deliver Brexit. She is scarcely any more honest than Johnson. She's also possibly even more stupid. Johnson at least had the self-awareness to realise he couldn't deliver Brexit, and left the field. May arrogantly assumed she (and she alone) could deliver it, and look at the fine mess she's made.

I would guess that most people who voted Remain would vote Remain, again, if there was a second referendum; but some of the borderline Leave voters may be tempted to take May’s deal or vote Remain if influenced by May’s 2 year fear campaign. Having said that, some Remainers are not happy about the way negotiations have been conducted, so some Remainers could, possibly, vote Leave just to stick it up her; so whilst all the government skulduggery continues to keep us in the EU, and keep the New World Order on track, it’s still not guaranteed.

It’s worth remembering too that May was at the helm during the Westminster Bridge Attack hoax where a number of dummies were placed on the bridge in an attempt to fool us. He's articulate, generally well informed and engaging. I would rate him worth a listen and often do. I agree that Brexit has turned him into a bit of a one trick pony, a little bit like a born again Christian who feels that they *MUST* tell you about the most important thing in the world.He does rather treat every conversation as a competition, and indeed one that he must win. Unfortunately this sometimes spills over into bullying on air, where he will take a small part of what a caller has said that he can either prove wrong or simply ridicule, and discard everything else they have said on the back of that. I loathe bulling in any form and generally turn off at that point.His other irritation for me is that he often crashes into the next presenter's time. It's the bullying approach again but I sometimes wonder if he gets the irony of talking of the Patriarchy and then taking time from the (female) presenter who follows him. It's a sort of on-air man-spreading and I cringe at it.There are other inconsistencies and potentially hypocritical positions, but I enjoy having the radio as background noise and he is quite acceptable and better than many.

Fiercely well informed and given the level of knowledge some of the people he deals with have, rather patient I would say. I don't listen to LBC but sometimes when feeling v low about Brexit, I watch him on Youtube to cheer me up. Well, maybe that should read depress me further! Sorry he has ditched, on apparently principled grounds, Newsnight, he was a good interviewer, though now Evan Davis, or is it Davies, has moved on, things are much improved on that front, particularly Emily Maitlis.

I think he chafes at the constraints of running a phone-in show. Annoyingly, people will keep ringing in to express their opinions, and even when they agree with JOB they are interrupting the flow of his rhetoric. I think he'd be much happier with the sort of chaotic three-hour monologue that Steve Allen performs. As for his shunning of Newsnight, one must be thankful for small mercies, I suppose.

Until this thread I had never listened to JOB, never even heard of him even except for his new book that I skimmed in Waterstone's the other day.  So I thought I'd check him out on Youtube.  And I thought he was terrific, very smart and funny as well as  extremely patient and polite towards some very dense and obsessed callers. Now I know this is scarcely an objective opinion as these Youtubes might be his 'greatest hits' and for all I know most of his output might be as boring as certain posters here claim.  But for any of you out there who haven't heard him, especially remoaners, I do recommend you to search him on Youtube - there's lots of it and I for one find them most entertaining.Having said that I can also understand why Leavers might not like him.  The thing is he is ruthless in demolishing poorly thought-through arguments, rather like our own TPH, HB-T and others on this site.  But whereas here on W4 the losers just disappear and imagine they have won whereas with JOB they haplessly carry on until they fizzle out. From what I have seen, he doesn't unfairly cut them off as some claim, but they simply reach a point at which they have nothing further to say as a result of not having thought hard or clearly enough about the issue in question. There's a particularly good one where he tries to pin a caller down on which of the various types of (mutually incompatible) versions of Brexit they prefer and, just like on this site, they can't or won't say.So thanks, Michael.  Great recommendation!

Alastair, it's a pretty reductive argument to suggest that the only reason someone might not  be a fan of JOB is that they are a 'Leaver'. It's not his opinions I object to, but his manner of delivering them. Far from finding him 'patient and polite', I find his manner brusque, aggressive and full of the sense of entitlement that one might expect from a posh boy talking down to the plebs (cf Boris Johnson). He is a man who literally loves the sound of his own voice (it has that heavy bass undertone that works well on radio), and after delivering one of his long, 15-minute homilies to introduce a topic, he still can't resist interrupting even those who completely agree with him to 'clarify' what they are saying. Still, chacun à son goût, I suppose.

Colin, I wasn't meaning to suggest that a person's views on Brexit would be the only thing that would determine their views of JOB.  That would be daft!  I can think of several reasons why a remainer might not like him, including the one Michael made in his opening post - that he is giving the cause a bad name.  (Though I would think it uncontroversial that he is more likely to wind up Brexiters than remainers.)Also, as I was careful to point out, my view of him is only based on a couple of Youtube videos that I found entertaining - from these I didn't get any sense that he was 'brusque, aggressive ... posh boy' though I it's possible that longer exposure might lead me to that conclusion.

James O’Brien is an excellent broadcaster. He has completely dismantled any pro Brexit arguments because there aren’t any so when people bleat on about sovereignty, taking back control, he clearly tell them the facts. Brexit supporters don’t like it because they are unable to argue with the facts and that it will make everyone poorer apart from people who are already very rich. I only ever listened to LBC on days when Nick Robinson was on Radio 4 because he is the most irritating and self opinionated of all broadcasters. Jeremy Vine a close second. However, I stopped listening to LBC about 18 months ago because I found the caliber of the callers to be extremely low and the estuary accents quite irritating.  I never understood how Nick Ferrari could indulge some of the dullards who phoned in.

Nick Ferrari is Nigel Farage in sheep's clothing. Sounds fair and balanced, but underneath there's the Sun journalist waiting to pounce. His choice of topic is the usual give away.JOB is great and I agree with nearly everything that he comes up with, but sometimes wish he would stop the rambling monologues. A bit Ronnie Corbett without the punch line. Of course best of all is Nick Abbott, but who listens to the radio at 10 oc on a friday or saturday night?

Thats about 1% chance of being correct. Infact all talk radio presenters use that "i told you so " these days.

James allocated 2 hours of his show today to callers who could confirm what any agenda could possibly be about if government imposed restrictions are not due to a virus. In other words, confirm the conspiracy if you know what it is. I only listened to the second hour but, in this time, it was confirmed to me that there IS an agenda, which is not due to any virus, and that our government is not currently meeting the demands of their elitist masters in full, as are some other rulers around the world. At one point, James even referred to The New World Order in general conservation, seemingly as a matter of fact. In any case, today’s show further confirmed that once you know who the players are, and how they work, you can get a good idea of what’s going on. Thanks, James.

There was also repeated severally on said JO'B show the issue of Home Secretary Patel's 'bullying' of Home Office staff with subsequent resignings of huffy HO bigwig office-blockers ~ that yesterday someone said re sorting of channel migrant tragedy that Home Office was after all a complete mess, a shambles and "not fit for purpose". Maybe Patel hasn't been effectively shouty enough against our rag-bag Home Office?

I caught the last hour of LBC O’Brien Show today, which he allocated to discussion on the German lockdown of the unvaccinated. Every caller claimed to live in Germany, with two claiming to live in Saxony, where vaccine take up is reported to be low; and not one caller condemned the actions of the German government despite forced vaccination hanging over the Germans – all callers put the choice not to be death shotted down to one ‘peculiar’ reason or another – right wing, anti-vax, hippies, preference to alternative medicines etc. You couldn’t make it up. The New World Order stop nowhere.The night before last on LBC Swarbrick show, a caller said that the covi-vax gave his son Guillain-Barre disease, which is very serious – it usually results in paralysis from the neck down, with recovery taking any length of time; but said his son is going back for more vax. So if you find yourself crippled by covi-vax, do the right thing like this lad plans to, and go back for more vax – to protect yourself and those around you.

Yesterday I caught JOB's conversation with the pub landlord (Hancock link) whose packaging business went from an annual of just £250K to £40M turnover thanks to a Pandemic contract.  JOB did a brilliant job in that interview, I think rather then claim new world order stuff you should look at how contracts were dished in the pandemic out now that sure looks like it needs some outside thinking
