What is the family relationship between Lorraine, Geraldine, Ernest and Herbert?
Weren't they the children of a vicar of st.Nicholas church?
Tina Gallacher ● 2410d
That was a splendid question Sarah...and "hello again" Tina was very very close with her answer. I didn't have a clue until I looked it up... had wondered why " Magnolia" wasn't included. .. and see that yhe answer relates to another Church down the road! (called? and the Reverend's name)

I read that they were named after a Vicar's family at St Paul's Church...down the road in Grove Park. He was Rev N Lorraine and his children named Ernest,Herbert and Geraldine. Thanks Sarah. Great info and well done Tina.
"The Italians" is currently a food and wine establishment on the High Road near Turnham Green...and successful it seems to be too.Years ago...and in my lifetime...a sizeable collection of Italians resided in Chiswick. Where? And for what reason?
POWs , and somewhere near Thames rd. I think
Tina Gallacher ● 2409d
Yes Tina to the POWs - I think it was Magnolia Road?(I recall Jim did a thread on this a few years ago!)
Sarah U Benson ● 2409d
Yes Tina and Sarah. The batch of Italians were in a Prisoner of War camp in Magnolia Road....at the junction of Ernest Gardens on the railway embankment side. Some 3-4 houses had been damaged and demolished after bombs had hit Thames Road. There were Nisson huts there and barbed wire but the prisoners were still able to pass sweets to us passing schoolchildren who were starved of sweets because of rationing. I have met old residents over the years who told me that some of the Italians stayed there till about 1949. I met Mrs Greening recently who used to live in Magnolia...and she remembered "Soppy Sid" who lived in Hearne Road. Another lady I met recently at Chiswick Age Concern said that she was now living in his old house!I recall many prefabricated dwellings is the area built after bomb sites had been cleared. Many on Thames Road in front of the City Barge, a batch in Whitehall Park Road and one on the corner of Earnest and Magnolia. I recall that some Italian POWs based in Osterley Park came back to stay in the area!
Jim Lawes ● 2408d
Three of what? Now one of what...in Chiswick?
I think I know this one but will give others chance to wake up ....
Sarah U Benson ● 2408d
4 Magnolia Road memories...Hi Jim – saw you making revelations about Magnolia Road so thought I'd share one of mine - just in case (unlikely I know) it rings a bell with someone...Researching on Ancestry I discovered a 1st cousin 1x removed who moved to number 4 Magnolia Road after the war in 1945. Betty (birth name Edith Ellen) born in 1900 was married to Herbert Francis Jordan – who lost a leg on the Somme in 1916.Must have been an unmissable sight at the time as this remarkable chap (who rode a bike to work) got on his two crutches and often pottered a few yards down to the Bull's Head for a pre-dinner pint. Herbie passed away in 1960 and Betty stayed on at Magnolia Road until she too died in 1981. I've several photos..PS Answer to your question. Is it fish shops?
Stuart Kerr ● 2408d
Post offices? Many years ago, circa 19th century, London in particular had multiple postal deliveries every day. Up to 10 I believe. There must have been a need for more post offices I would think. It was probably quicker getting a reply to correspondence then than now, despite emails and all that twitter stuff.
Keith Iddon ● 2408d
Is it Starbucks?
You may well be spot on Sarah but I had in my mind something to do with railways!Stuart has raised an interesting challenge and we might have some info for him.
Jim Lawes ● 2407d
"Is it Starbucks?"IIRC there were four branches of Starbucks in Chiswick at one point and there are currently two.1: Sainsburys, Essex PlacePreceded by a flower shop.Replaced by Sainsburys cafe and again by Argos counter.2: 376 CHR / Belmont Road junctionStill trading.3: 257 CHRPreceded by TSB.Replaced by Betfred.4: 280 CHR / Fishers Lane junctionPreceded by ??Replaced by WaftAnd more recently after 1 and 3 above closed:5: 20 Turnham Green TerraceStill trading.

Platforms at Gunnersbury station ?
Tina Gallacher ● 2406d
It had 4 platforms once called Brentford Road and now has two platforms. That is a google answer
Julian Pavey ● 2406d
Thank you for your interesting answers and support of this thread. You may recall that the answer is to do with Chiswick's railways.... indeed level-crossings!One remains in Grove Park Terrace. Where were the other 2?
Jim Lawes ● 2406d
Yes, there is only one level-crossing now. The other two would have been at Chiswick station where Grove Park Road ran into Sutton Court Road, replaced by Grove Park Bridge in about 1914, I think; and, not sure, was there one at Brooks Lane/Brooks Road? However if you regard Chiswick as being everything in W4, then we still have 3 level crossings with the other 2 being in Bollo Lane (the freight line is the W4/W3 postcode boundary so perhaps that one should count as ½). And in former times there would have been 1 or ½ in Bath Road where the line from South Acton to Hammersmith & Chiswick crossed on or near the borough and W4/W6 postcode boundaries.
Richard Jennings ● 2406d
Well done Richard. I regard the 2 in Bollo Lane as being in the next Borough...but yes Bath Road...and the one linking SCR with Grove Park Road..in front of the old Grove Park Hotel. I recall a past Forum message saying that road bridge in Grove Park was once called the Devonshire Bridge.
It's true!
What local resident in the 18th century might have said that.
Jim Lawes ● 2405d
One of Cromwell's daughters who married the Earl or baron of Fauconberg, or something like that!
Tina Gallacher ● 2405d
Well done Tina. Yes the Countess of Fauconberg, Oliver Cromwell's 3rd daughter could have said that.In addition to Oliver Island (anyone visited the island?)..there's Oliver Close (built on the site of the RJ Park's packing factory), the Cromwell Road Extention...and didn't the Countess live in the old original Sutton Court.Local history in the area is limitless!

Can you name these two oddities?
YC.W4

Anything to do with a couple of cricketers?
Tina Gallacher ● 2404d
Vivienne knew the answers. .. both close to Fauconberg Road.Hazeldene Road is a crescent....and Compton Crescent is a straight road!
Jim Lawes ● 2403d
The clue YC.W4 refers to Young's Corner.
Dermot Jordan
Vivienne Cox ● 2403d
Hooray Vivienne. Yes Mr Dermot Jordan. He's a fine sportsman too. A Chiswick Old Meadonian.

26 Wellesley Road and other locations.
How do you define Chiswick for the purposes of this question?
Embassy of Moldova, Edensor Road and Vietnamese Defence Attaché, Barrowgate Road?
J. F. Bingham ● 2402d
Hi Robin. My Chiswick locations are within the Council Wards of Riverside, Turnham Green and Homefields.JF is correct about the Moldova Embassy. I didn't know of the Vietnamese diplomatic place...so there's still one more to go!
Yes..and well done Robin. The Corona Stage School is correct but by the 1950s and 1960s it had moved to an old private School building next to Arlington (Park?) Mansions and facing Turnham Green.
Hi Robin. You're quite right to query that status of my posting. The answer, as you seemingly know, is the Handeledbanken on Young's Corner at No 2 Chiswick High Road.Vivienne must have known that too...identifying the DJ
Name the two businesses that used to occupy the site of Sainsburys and it's car park?
So the third diplomatic place is (perhaps if it qualifies!) The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia Cultural Bureau located on Chiswick High Road...next to the Honda Showroom at the Power Road junction. The building is on the site of thr elegsnt looking St James' Church.
Jim Lawes ● 2401d
Before Sainsburys the major part of the site was occupied by the Whitbread Bottling Plant. It was a delight to watch tje horse-drawn drays travel across the cobbled area before turning onto the High Road. The rear of that site was an area of market gardens..a nursery...run by Fromows.
