The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Southall will mark a landmark moment in British Muslim history this weekend, celebrating one hundred years of the Fazl Mosque — London’s first purpose-built mosque and a building whose influence has reached far beyond its quiet suburban street in Southfields.

On Saturday 3 October, civic, religious and political leaders from across Middlesex will gather at Darus Salaam Mosque in Boyd Avenue, Southall to honour the centenary of the mosque’s opening in 1926 and to reflect on a century of integration, loyalty and service.

Though modest in size, with space for around 150 worshippers, the Fazl Mosque has played an outsized role in shaping Muslim life in Britain. It has welcomed some of the most significant figures of the last century, including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan; Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan, President of the UN General Assembly; Professor Abdus Salam, the first Muslim Nobel laureate in science; and members of the Saudi royal family who later became kings. More recently, HRH Prince Edward has visited the mosque, underscoring its continued importance.

Its historic significance has been formally recognised in recent years: Historic England granted the mosque listed status in 2018, and in March 2026 Wandsworth Council awarded it a green heritage plaque, acknowledging its cultural and architectural value.

His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Fifth Caliph and Worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, reflected on the mosque’s legacy, saying: “For one hundred years, the Fazl Mosque has stood as a place of worship, peace and service to humanity. Its history reflects the principle that true faith requires us to serve our neighbours, show loyalty to the country in which we live, and make peace with all people, regardless of their faith or background.”

For the Southall community, the centenary is deeply personal. Sayeed Abdus, President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Southall, said the mosque’s founding shaped the growth of communities across Britain:

“Our community in Southall exists because of that mosque in London. From the Fazl Mosque, missionaries were sent out to towns and cities across Britain to build communities like ours, and everything we do here began there.”

Since its opening, the Fazl Mosque has been a centre for interfaith dialogue, public debate and community engagement. It has hosted events marking the Silver, Diamond and Platinum Jubilees of Queen Elizabeth II, the Coronation of King Charles III, charity walks, blood drives and food-distribution campaigns — all rooted in the community’s ethos of service.

The centenary celebrations will launch a year-long national programme under the theme Fazl Mosque: Beacon of Peace – A Century of Integration, Loyalty and Service. The initiative includes serving 10,000 meals to homeless and vulnerable people and providing 10,000 volunteer hours to support communities across Britain.
