Trailfinders Stalwart Retires from Professional Rugby
Injury forces Rayn Smid to quit after nine seasons at the club

Ealing Trailfinders back rower Rayn Smid has announced his retirement from professional rugby following injury. He will continue his rehabilitation with the club.
Rayn joined Ealing Trailfinders in 2016 and went on to make 173 appearances, becoming the club’s most capped player in the professional era. His tenure included multiple titles and leadership roles, marking him as a key figure in the club’s recent history.
He was part of the squad that won the British & Irish Cup in the 2017–18 season, starting in the final against Leinster. The following year, Smid was appointed club captain and played primarily at number eight, leading the team to Championship Cup success against London Irish in 2018–19.
Under his captaincy, Ealing Trailfinders secured their first-ever Championship title in 2021–22, with Rayn contributing 15 tries during the campaign. He continued to play a central role in the club’s subsequent Championship wins in 2023–24 and 2024–25, as well as two Premiership Cup semi-final runs.
Beyond his on-field achievements, Rayn has been recognised as a respected presence at Trailfinders Sports Club. His leadership and experience have been credited with helping shape the club’s development during a period of sustained success.
Reflecting on his time at the club, he said, “My nine seasons at Ealing Trailfinders have been incredibly special. The club has played a huge role in both my life and my family’s life, helping me grow on and off the pitch. While it’s bittersweet to be retiring, I’ll look back on my time at Trailfinders with real pride and fondness.”
Ben Ward, Director of Rugby, paid tribute to his contribution adding, “Rayn has played a fundamental part in the club's transition from where it was several years ago to where we are now. His impact on and off the field will stand the test of time at Ealing Trailfinders.”
The club has thanked Smid for his service and wished him well in retirement.
