TG Jones Confirms Greenford Store Closure

TG Jones has confirmed that it is to close its Greenford store at Westway Cross Shopping Park. The move is part of the early stages of a major restructuring programme that could reshape the chain nationwide.
Originally a WHSmith. The Greenford unit became TG Jones following the purchase and rebranding by private equity firm Modella Capital in 2025.
A spokesperson for TG Jones confirmed the closure date of 26 September to us but declined to provide further details. The decision comes as the company begins implementing a court-approved restructuring plan that could see up to 150 of its roughly 450 stores shut, alongside rent reductions at many others.
The restructuring follows a turbulent year for the former WHSmith high street business. WHSmith sold the division to Modella Capital for £76 million in 2025, ending more than 230 years of the WHSmith name on Britain’s high streets. The sale did not include WHSmith’s travel arm, which continues to operate at airports, hospitals and railway stations under the WHSmith brand.
After the takeover, Modella rebranded the high street stores as TG Jones, but sales quickly fell. By mid-2026, the company warned that without a formal restructuring plan—including debt write-offs, rent cuts and store closures—it might have to call in administrators.
At the end of July, Mr Justice Hildyard approved the rescue plan, though he expressed scepticism about the retailer’s prospects, noting “very considerable” risks in achieving a turnaround. He highlighted the company’s sharp drop in valuation—from around £40 million at acquisition to £3 million—as evidence of the challenges ahead.
The judge approved the plan because Modella committed new investment, but many creditor groups opposed it. Fewer than a third of general suppliers supported the scheme, and no landlords of stores earmarked for closure or rent reductions backed it. Small suppliers, including card makers and stationery brands, are expected to lose at least half of the money owed to them.
TG Jones, which until recently employed around 5,000 staff, is one of several retail chains in Modella’s portfolio. The firm also owns Hobbycraft (which also has a unit at Westway Cross) and recently acquired Flying Tiger, while previously owning Claire’s UK and The Original Factory Shop before both collapsed earlier this year.
