Passengers boarding the train at Ealing Broadway station
December 30, 2024
A passenger on the Elizabeth line platform at Ealing Broadway station was nearly seriously injured after their hand became stuck in a closing door.
They were dragged along the platform for about 17 metres before the driver was alerted by other passengers and the train stopped. A member of the station’s staff managed to free them and they suffered only minor cuts and bruises.
The incident, which took place just after midnight on 24 November, but has only just come to light following a report by the BBC, is the latest in a series at the station.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched an inquiry into the arrangements in place to manage and control the risks associated with passengers getting on and off Elizabeth line trains at Ealing Broadway.
The operator of the service, MTR-Elizabeth line, has launched its own investigation.
Transport for London has apologised to the passenger for ‘this distressing incident’.
Its spokesperson said, "We will always strive to learn from incidents and improve operational safety.
"MTR-Elizabeth line is fully co-operating with the RAIB to establish the root cause of this incident to determine what steps they can take to avoid any further events of this nature and to share learnings with the industry.
"While serious injuries on our network are rare, we are undertaking a huge range of work aimed eradicating such incidents and making travelling even safer for everyone."
