Recycling Services to be Extended
Those in flats set to benefit from new service
Ealing Council is rolling out new recycling services to an extra 29,000 households across the borough.
Every flat and hard to access property in the borough should benefit from the collections, which will be phased in from November. The council is also taking on a dedicated flats recycling officer to make sure everyone knows about the new services.
It will cost £256,000 to set up and is expected to help residents to save more than 1,500 tonnes of rubbish from landfill each year.
Recycling rates are at an all time high, reaching 35% for the first time.
Labour's spokesman on recycling issues Councillor Bassam Mahfouz welcomed the news but is worried the plans have not been fully thought through.
He said: '' For months the Conservatives have been dragging their heels on recycling in flats....next year they would have been forced by the Labour Government to extend the recycling service to flats and now at the last minute they are rushing through plans to start a scheme in late November....
The devil is in the detail of how this will be delivered for residents.''
The scheme will be finalised at Cabinet in September.
