Tesco has confirmed that it will close its Chiswick Express store on Chiswick High Road later this year.
The store, located at 248 Chiswick High Road, is one of several smaller-format branches being reviewed particularly in London as the retailer focuses on consolidating sites, improving efficiency and adapting to changing shopping habits.
The loss of the High Road Express store will significantly reduce late-night and Sunday shopping options as the store is open from 7am to 11pm. The extended opening hours mean that many people rely on the branch for top-up shopping, last-minute essentials and out-of-hours purchases. Once it closes, the nearest alternatives will have more limited hours, and some will not offer the same level of convenience.
In a message to local councillors, Tesco’s Community Engagement Manager for London said that all staff from the Chiswick Express branch will be transferred to nearby stores and that discussions are ongoing about how the closures will impact them.
The closure comes at a time when the supermarket sector is undergoing significant change, with major chains adjusting their property portfolios in response to rising operating costs, shifts towards online shopping and the growing popularity of larger convenience formats. Tesco has been gradually reducing the number of its smallest Express stores in areas where footfall has declined or where alternative branches are close by.
Hammersmith and Chiswick MP Andy Slaughter said, "I know Chiswick shoppers will be concerned by the closure and what will replace it. I am making enquiries with Tesco about this, and I will ensure to keep Chiswick residents updated."

Morrisons is preparing to open a new store near Turnham Green, adding another major supermarket presence to the area.
Nearby Marks and Spencer has recently expanded and this may have had an impact on Tesco’s decision with the more upmarket store competing on price for everyday purchases such as milk.
Tesco has not yet confirmed a specific closing date, but the company says it will continue to update the community as plans progress.
