The new shop is at 40 Chiswick Lane
September 13, 2024
Following the opening of Everyone Reads on Chiswick High Road this July, a second bookshop has been launched in W4.
The ribbon was cut on the Small Library Company at 40 Chiswick Lane last Thursday (5 September) with Catherine Foyle doing the honours.
The new venture represents an expansion of Meg Dillon’s business which is based at Cygnet House on Chiswick Mall. The original small library is a room in her riverside home overlooking the Thames from which she bought and sold books online and helped organise other private collections.
Her stock grew rapidly when she was presented with the chance to buy from Christopher Foyle’s personal library after his death. Meg’s partner David was Catherine Foyle’s brother in-law and it was she who made the offer of access to her late husband’s books.
Christopher Foyle, the former chairman of Foyles bookshops, died of leukaemia in 2022 having transformed the chain which is now part of the Waterstones Group. 3,000 of the books in the new shop will be from his collection which includes works on art, history, literature and philosophy as well as novels.
Meg Dillon is a published author herself having written about the experience of tracking her son and his girlfriend as they went on a cycling trip across the world in 2018.
