Amateur Football Combination Division Senior 2 South
Old Meadonians Reserves 3 Sinjuns Grammarians 1
With the A.F.A. representative side playing a cup game, Amateur Football Combination Premier Division teams had no league games and Old Meadonians’ newly promoted and unbeaten Reserves strutted their stuff on Riverside Lands to send fellow promotees and similarly unbeaten Sinjuns Grammarians packing with a resounding 3-1 defeat.
However, anyone looking in the referee’s notebook afterwards would have been fooled by the unbelievable nine names in it into thinking that the game had been a blood bath. This was far from the truth. The young referee made a rod for his own back by allowing misguided tackles to go unpunished in the first half and lost the thread in the second half when he proceeded to caution players for fouls which were neither malicious or in sensitive areas, thereby disrupting the game.
The calming influence of Meads’ newly appointed manager, Kevin McCarthy assisted by former Meads’ player Chris Greening on the touch line kept the hosts on an even keel while the visitors fell to pieces as a consequence. Meads’ first goal came from new boy Matt Newton on twenty minutes and, although the visitors equalised almost immediately, Ryan de Coteau regained the lead on the stroke of half time.
Meads pressed hard without luck throughout the second half until Adam Boynton escaped his marker’s clutches in the eightieth minute to finish clinically from just inside the area.
