One of Chiswick’s oldest sports clubs is preparing for a new season and inviting residents of all ages to give bowls a try. The Masonian Bowls Club, based in Dukes Meadows, will open its greens at the end of April with a renewed push to attract new members and keep the tradition of local bowling alive.

Founded in 1920, the club traces its origins to Chiswick entrepreneurs Dan and Charles Mason, who built a sports club for their employees. Members later renamed it in their honour, creating the Masonian Sports Club — now known as Masonian Bowls Club. Despite the name, the club stresses that it has no connection to the Freemasons, a common misconception.

After losing its original site in 1984 when the land was sold for development and Staveley Gardens was built, the club relocated to Dukes Meadows, where it has enjoyed decades of friendly and competitive play. Today, it remains the only council‑run bowls club still active in the London Borough of Hounslow.

Like many traditional sports clubs, Masonian has seen membership decline in recent years, but its volunteers are fighting back with community‑focused events. The club plans family fun days featuring barbecues and games, with proceeds supporting Shooting Star Children’s Hospice. Thursday evenings will be open for newcomers to try the sport, and Sunday sessions will offer guidance for those unable to attend during the week. Equipment is available to borrow — the only requirement is to wear flat shoes.

Club members say they are fortunate to have the support of Dukes Meadows Trust, which has helped raise funds for essential maintenance of the green, keeping membership fees affordable.

Anyone interested in trying bowls or joining the club can visit www.masonianbowlsclub.co.uk or call 07394 362064 for more information.
