The upgrade of the hygiene rating of a sushi restaurant and café by Chiswick Park station has been confirmed.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) published in the last few days the outcome of an inspection made by Ealing Council officers on 4 February which gave the highest rating in all categories to Yuma Sushi.

This was in contrast to the report of a previous inspection made at the end of last year which gave it the lowest possible rating signifying ‘Urgent Improvement Required. Any establishment getting a rating below 5-stars is entitled to request a reinspection.

5 star ratings should be published on the FSA web site on the date of the inspection, but local councillor Gary Malcolm confirmed claims by the restaurant’s owner, Julia Carr, that delays in submitting paper work held up the updating of the restaurant’s record.

The KFC branch on Chiswick High Road was also inspected around the same time by hygiene inspectors from Hounslow Council and given a zero rating. It was also subject to reinspection and awarded five stars at the beginning of this month.

Yuma Sushi is not the only local business to have received a zero rating recently. The KFC branch on Chiswick High Road was inspected by Hounslow Council in December and also told that urgent improvement was necessary in hygienic food handling and the cleanliness of facilities. Staff at the restaurant told customers that a flood had taken place around the time of the inspection requiring a temporary closure.

Inspectors warned that major improvements were needed in the management of food safety. Staff at the branch said the inspection coincided with a flooding incident that forced the restaurant to close temporarily. It reopened only after approval from an Environmental Health Officer.

A KFC spokesperson said, “We have strict quality and hygiene processes in place across our restaurants, and this rating falls below the high standards we expect. The restaurant team acted quickly to get things back up to scratch and we've invited the Environmental Health Officer back for a re-inspection to see the improvements.”

As with Yuma Sushi, a five star rating was given after the food safety team visited again.
