Great Chiswick Spring Clean this weekend
The Turnham Green group aims to collect 25 bags of litter
March 19, 2025
The Turnham Green litter picking group will be joining with other volunteers across the country as part of the Great British Spring Clean (GBSC).
They will be assembling outside Christ Church on Turnham Green on Sunday 23 March. All are welcome to join them for about an hour of litter picking, between 2.30 - 3.30pm, followed by tea, cake, and time to chat. They look forward to seeing as many new volunteers as possible this Sunday, as they’ve made a bold commitment to collect 25 bags of rubbish as part of the GBSC campaign.
Cllr Ron Mushiso said, “This is our biggest date in the calendar because we join up in solidarity with the rest of Britain to keep our communities tidy. The spring clean is an opportunity for residents to do their bit in helping maintain our sense of civic responsibility that has long been associated with Chiswick."
Remember to bring your own gardening/protective gloves if possible.
The GBSC is the UK's largest mass-participation environmental campaign, organised annually by the charity Keep Britain Tidy. Since its inception in 2016, it has mobilized millions of volunteers, known as #LitterHeroes, to collect over four million bags of litter from streets, parks, and beaches across the nation.
In 2025, the GBSC celebrates its tenth year and is scheduled to run from 21 March to 6 April During this period, individuals, community groups, schools, and businesses are encouraged to participate by pledging to pick up a certain number of litter bags. This collective effort aims to foster community spirit and enhance local environments.
Volunteers can pledge as individuals, groups, or schools, committing to collect as much litter as they can during the campaign. Pledges can be made through the Keep Britain Tidy website, where participants will also find resources and safety guidelines to support their litter-picking activities.
The campaign's impact extends beyond immediate environmental benefits. According to Keep Britain Tidy, 97% of participants in the 2024 campaign felt they had made a positive difference in their local area, and 86% felt part of a national movement tackling litter. This sense of community involvement underscores the campaign's broader social significance
The Turnham Group meets on the fourth Sunday of each month excluding August and December. Future dates for this year are 27 April, 25 May, 22 June, 27 July, 28 September, 26 October, 23 November.
