The national award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities

A record number of Hounslow parks will be flying the flag for excellence after impressing a panel of green experts this year. Thirteen parks and the Church Road Allotments in Hanworth have all been given charity Keep Britain Tidy’s coveted Green Flag status.
To celebrate the success, Carillion hosted the first Green Flag Award ceremony at Feltham Rugby Club on Friday 24 July to recognise the hard work of parks staff, friends groups and allotment associations.
Councillor Richard Foote, Hounslow Council's Cabinet Member for Community Protection, presented Carillion staff with awards for ensuring the sites were Green Flag worthy.
Councillor Mukesh Malhotra presented the friends groups and allotment associations with their new Green Flags and to round off the celebrations, Councillor Sue Sampson presented an award for outstanding contribution to the borough’s allotments to Jim Buchan; and an award and promotion to Lee Powell who has progressed from Arboriculture Groundsman to Second Climber in 12 months.
Lee started in 2014 as a grounds maintenance operative and has successfully completed his aerial rescue and chainsaw qualifications.
The Green Flag Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit parks and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Leisure, Councillor Ed Mayne, said: “Our parks and open spaces are among the main reasons that Hounslow is such a great place to live and work. My congratulations go to Carillion and their dedicated parks staff, the allotment holders and friends groups who have put in so much effort to make these 14 green spaces such wonderful havens.”
