Chiswick Flower Market marked its sixth anniversary in style last weekend, celebrating a milestone year that also saw the market receive prominent coverage on BBC London TV News.

The broadcaster visited the market on Sunday (5 December)to speak with growers about the challenging summer drought and its impact on flower production, producing a report that showcased the market’s traders and the vibrant atmosphere on Chiswick High Road. A feature article with photographs also appeared on the BBC’s main website, giving the volunteer-run market a welcome boost in visibility.

The anniversary market drew large crowds throughout the day, with visitors enjoying cake and Prosecco to mark six years since the market first opened in the Old Market Place.

Local councillors, supporters and members of the press joined the celebrations, alongside the Worshipful Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Ranjit Gill, who offered warm words about the market’s contribution to the community. Industry veteran Rob Hardy of Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants also spoke, praising the market’s role in championing growers and independent horticultural businesses.

The festivities were accompanied by live music, poetry and a wide array of flowers and plants, with traders reporting strong footfall throughout the day. A stilt walker added to the celebratory mood, while visitors gathered around the birthday cake created by Liana from Caketive.

The BBC’s visit highlighted the pressures facing growers after months of record summer weather, with traders including Jazzy Rose Flowers and Stevens of Sibsey interviewed about the shortage of blooms caused by drought conditions. Market organisers said the coverage would help put Chiswick and its monthly markets “on the map”, drawing new visitors from across London.

Chiswick Flower Market, founded in 2020 and run entirely by volunteers, operates as a Community Interest Company, reinvesting all profits back into the local area. Held on the first Sunday of every month, it has become a fixture of Chiswick’s cultural and retail landscape, attracting visitors from across the capital while supporting independent businesses and promoting environmental awareness.

The next market will take place on Sunday 4 October, with organisers already preparing for another busy day.
