Chiswick's Festive Switch-on Brings Cheer Despite Unlit Tree

Chiswick’s Christmas lights were switched on in style this Thursday evening (27 November), with a joyful performance from CTA Performing Arts students and a visit from Father Christmas delighting a large crowd gathered. But while the mince pies were warm and the carols heartfelt, one tree remained conspicuously dark after the crowds dispersed.
The tree in question—positioned at the corner of Annandale Road and Chiswick High Road —was switched off shortly after the event due to safety concerns. According to Hounslow Highways, the cable connecting the tree to its power source was too long to meet traffic management safety standards, given the need to keep pavements and crossings clear. Efforts are now underway to resolve the issue, with Wheeler’s of Chiswick, the council’s traffic team, and Hounslow Highways working together to find a solution.
Wheeler’s was never asked to provide a tree for this primary location. The company had generously agreed to supply two trees for secondary sites, and stepped in only after Hounslow Council cut its borough-wide Christmas tree budget—part of a wider effort to address a reported £51 million overspend. The result was that one of Wheeler’s trees was repositioned to the main junction, where the power setup has proved problematic.
Despite the setback, the switch-on was a resounding success. Children aged 7 to 14 from CTA Performing Arts sang and danced to kick off the season, while residents enjoyed more than 200 mince pies and 140 Tunnock’s tea cakes donated by locals. The Chiswick Lighting Company provided the magic switch, and Frivoli art gallery lent its table for the ceremony. Volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly, and Hounslow Highways managed the logistics to keep everyone safe.
The hope now is that the festive atmosphere will encourage residents to support Chiswick’s shops and eateries in the run-up to Christmas and New Year.
