St Nicholas Church in Chiswick will welcome architectural historian and author Janet Gough OBE on Thursday 8 October for an illustrated talk exploring the stained glass of England’s cathedrals. The event, hosted by the Friends of St Nicholas Church, begins at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm.
Janet Gough is widely known for her work championing the nation’s ecclesiastical heritage. As the former Director of Cathedrals and Church Buildings for the Church of England, she has spent years documenting and promoting the architectural and artistic treasures found in churches across the country. She is the author of four books on England’s cathedrals and churches, and her expertise was recognised in 2017 when she was appointed OBE for services to heritage.
Most recently, in 2024, she advised Royal Mail on its Christmas stamp series featuring five cathedrals from across the UK.
Her talk, titled Divine Light: the Stained Glass of England’s Cathedrals, will guide audiences through the history, craftsmanship and symbolism of stained glass, drawing on examples from some of the country’s most celebrated cathedral windows. The evening promises an engaging and accessible introduction to an art form that has shaped the character of English sacred spaces for centuries.
Tickets are £10, with a reduced price of £5 for students, and are free for members of the Friends. The Friends of St Nicholas Church are sponsored by Fuller Smith & Turner PLC.
