St Nicholas Church on Church Street will open its doors on Sunday 18 October for an afternoon of music led by violinist Doris Kuo and pianist-singer Henry Tozer, in a concert raising funds to support young local musicians.

The performance begins at 3pm and brings together classical repertoire, 20th-century song and a touch of Heifetz magic. The centrepiece of the programme is César Franck’s Sonata in A major for violin and. Alongside it, the duo will perform songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter, Leonard Cohen and other iconic writers, as well as Estrellita, Manuel Ponce’s tender melody in Jascha Heifetz’s celebrated arrangement.

Kuo, originally from New Zealand and of Taiwanese heritage, trained at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and has performed widely across the UK and Germany. Since moving to London to join Sinfonia Smith Square, she has built a reputation for chamber recitals in churches across the city, while also developing her work as a singer-songwriter.

Tozer brings a distinctive blend of influences to the piano and voice, drawing on Chopin, Sinatra and the singer-songwriters of the late 1960s. A Cambridge-trained musician, his compositions have appeared in film soundtracks and even at the BBC Proms. He continues to write and record from his London flat-studio — famously sleeping beneath his grand piano — while teaching meditation and exploring the idea of art as a form of internal alchemy.

Tickets are £10 on the door, with £5 admission for students. After the concert, audiences are invited to stay for tea and cake (£5), with all payments taken by cash or card. Proceeds support St Nicholas Church’s programme for emerging young musicians.

St Nicholas Church is at Church Street, W4 2PJ.
