An evening dedicated to four of the most influential tenor saxophonists
October 11, 2026
The New Tones Jazz Orchestra returns to St Michael and All Angels Church this October with Tenor Madness, an evening dedicated to four of the most influential tenor saxophonists in modern jazz: John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson.
Following the success of its previous concert, the 17-piece big band will once again perform in the round, using the church’s acoustics to create an immersive experience for audiences seated all around the musicians.
The programme brings together some of the most celebrated works in the hard bop and post ‑bop repertoire, including “Giant Steps ”, “Naima ”, “Footprints ”, “Inner Urge ”, “Recordáme ” and the title tune “Tenor Madness ”. Alongside these classics, listeners can expect a selection of rarely performed arrangements that highlight the depth and innovation of each composer’s legacy.
Led by local pianist James Hayes, the orchestra features an accomplished line ‑up including Amy Winehouse collaborators Aaron Liddard and Giles Straw, and West End trumpet players Graham Russell and Andy Gibson.
The concert takes place on Wednesday 14 October from 7pm to 9pm, with doors opening at 6.40pm.
Proceeds will support the Orchard House School charities, and tickets are available on the door or via Eventbrite.
