The author's research has taken him to the marshes of the estuary
October 9, 2026
River enthusiasts will have the chance to delve into the lesser-known waterways that feed the Thames later this month, when author Dick Mayon-White visits Chiswick Pier to give an illustrated talk on Tuesday 27 October.
The evening, organised jointly by Chiswick Pier Trust and the River Thames Society, begins with doors and the bar opening at 6.30pm, with the talk starting at 7pm.
Mayon-White will draw on his travels along 33 tributaries of the Thames, journeys that have taken him from Wiltshire villages and the Surrey Hills to London boroughs and the marshes of the estuary. His recently published book, Exploring the Thames Rivers and Streams, co-authored with Wendy Yorke, charts how these rivers shape landscapes, support wildlife, enrich local history and offer rewarding routes for walkers. The talk will include stories, photographs and insights from these explorations.
Before the main presentation, the River Thames Society will give a short introduction to its work. Members of either organisation can attend free of charge, while tickets for non-members are £5 and available via the booking link.
The event takes place at The Pier House, Chiswick Pier, Corney Reach Way, W4 2UG, concluding at around 8.30pm. Tickets can be purchased online.
Chiswick Pier Trust is also preparing for its annual Battersea Fireworks River Cruise on Sunday 8 November. The open-topped boat departs Chiswick Pier at 6pm, with boarding from 5.45pm, and will travel downriver to watch the Battersea Park fireworks from the water before returning at around 8.45pm. Tickets are £43 and early booking is advised due to high demand. Book online at www.chiswickpier.org.uk or call 020 8742 2713.
