Chiswick Pier will host an evening of environmental insight and community action on Tuesday 24 March, when two volunteer activists from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) visit The Pier House to discuss the growing challenges facing the UK’s rivers, seas and waterways.

Nicole and Caroline, both long-standing volunteers with the charity, will lead a talk exploring our relationship with water, the scale of pollution affecting rivers like the Thames, and the role that ordinary people can play in driving change. Their session will look at what activism means in practice — from citizen science and campaigning to community clean-ups — and how local residents can get involved.

Surfers Against Sewage began in Cornwall in 1990 as a grassroots protest movement led by surfers demanding an end to sewage discharges along the coastline. Over the past 35 years it has grown into one of the UK’s most influential environmental charities, with more than 40,000 volunteers and a national network of community groups. Its work now spans water quality monitoring, plastic-pollution campaigns, climate action, education programmes and political lobbying.

The charity’s major campaigns — including #EndSewagePollution, Plastic Free Communities and the Million Mile Clean — have helped push water companies, regulators and government to take water quality more seriously. SAS has also been instrumental in raising public awareness of sewage spills, storm overflows and the health risks associated with polluted waterways.

Doors open at 6.30pm with refreshments available, and the talk begins at 7pm. Tickets which can be bought online cost £5, with free entry for Chiswick Pier Trust members.

Events like this are organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust which works to engage people with the River Thames. It provides access to the Thames and supports major river events, as well as organising events of its own.
