Chiswick High Road Amongst Top 10 PCN Hotspots

18,668 penalties issued in 12 months ranks road third highest in capital

An Evening Standard investigation has found that Chiswick High Road ranks high amongst the PCN 'hotspots' in London.

The road, which runs east from King Street to Kew Bridge, came third in the capital with a total of 18,668 fines issued in the past 12 months.

According to the Standard, almost four million penalties were issued to motorists in London over the past year with a number of roads netting their local authority more than £1 million a year in revenue from PCNs.

Appeal Now founder Barrie Segal commented, “There are a few reasons that some roads are much worse than others. Often it's road signage - one sign will contradict another so it will be confusing for the motorist. Sometimes it's poor road marking."

He added, "The problem is there's no incentive for councils to correct this.”

A spokesman for Hounslow Council told ChiswickW4.com, "The list of roads aren’t really comparable as, for example, Herbert Road is only approximately 300 yards long, but still issued half the amount of PCN’s as on Chiswick High Road – which is considerably longer.

“Chiswick High Road is one of the main roads through the borough. It has a large shopping area, commercial and residential areas and as such the street has varied sections that include waiting and loading restrictions, pay and display and residential bays to ensure traffic flow and accessibility for all services and visitors to the area.

“The number of PCN's that have been issued given the length of the street is not excessive when you consider the volume of traffic that uses the road.

“We actively try to make sure traffic is kept moving and buses can move freely along clear bus lanes and other road users are safe.”
