After years of discussion and proposals for alternative uses for the building, the toilets on Turnham Green Common are to be demolished. The decision was taken by the Chiswick Area Monitoring Committee, subject to conservation area planning consent bringing an end to the deliberations which began in 2002.
Suggestions for alternative uses included a café, artist studios, tourist information and a refreshment kiosk.
None of the schemes were deemed viable as the facilities were either too small or not suitable or inappropriate.
In June 2006 the Committee received a report recommending that the toilets should be demolished which was approved in principle. Unfortunately recent incidences of antisocial behaviour at the site culminated in a serious assault in August 2009.
The building and the section of land on which it sits is owned by the Council. It has been out of use for some time and is partially derelict. The remainder of Turnham Green common is owned by the Church Commissioners of the Church of England.
Section 106 funds will be used to finance the £9,000 project. No date has been set for the work to begin.
