A man from Chiswick has been arrested after a lengthy stand-off with police in a multi-storey car park.

Police were called to a reported break in at the Kesarum restaurant on Southampton High Street at 9am this Monday (30 December).

They had been told that an intruder was causing damage inside the premises. When they arrived, a man fled the building and ran to a multi-storey car park in Eastgate Street, climbing several floors.

A stand-off lasting nearly three hours ensued and the South Central Ambulance Service and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service joined police officers at the scene to ensure the safety of the man and members of the public

30-year-old Anthony Gormley of Walpole Gardens has now been charged with burglary. He appeared at Southampton Magistrates Court on Tuesday (31 December) where he was remanded into custody.

He is next due to appear at Southampton Magistrates Court on Tuesday 21 January.
