There has been a steady flow of tributes to the landlord of a popular Irish pub in Chiswick following the announcement of his death this Sunday (18 May).

Brendan Connolly, of Connolly’s on Chiswick High Road, was a well known and loved local figure. He was 67-years-old.

He is generally credited with providing a welcoming home away from home both to Chiswick’s long term resident Irish community and more recent arrivals. Sports fans of all nations chose the pub as the venue to watch big games and the regular Friday night traditional Irish music sessions, held up until last year, attracted visitors from across Europe.

He ran the bar with his partner for nearly a decade, cultivating a warm environment. He was deeply involved in the local community. He supported the Chiswick Celtic Football Club since its inception in 2019, providing sponsorship, hosting post-match gatherings, and facilitating club events. Additionally, he was a dedicated supporter of the Republic of Ireland Soccer Supporters Club (London), attending games and sponsoring events such as their annual charity quiz.

Singer Niall McNamee described Brendan as a ‘legend’ in a post on Instagram adding, “When I moved to London at 17, I was in an empty box room, in an empty flat in Chiswick, alone for the first time.

“I took a stroll down the road and found Connolly’s Pub. Thank God. Brendan was the first person I spoke to in London.

“Connolly's became the centre of my world for a couple of years, a place of safety.

“An embassy where I was able to build up relationships and a friendship group that still lasts today.”

Brendan leaves behind a wife, Linda, a son, Jason and a daughter, Lorraine as well as three grandsons.

His funeral Service f will take place on 5 June at Mortlake Crematorium, (TW9 4EN).
