Chiswick Riverside councillor, Amy Croft, looks set to become the next Mayor of Hounslow.
Members of the Labour group on Hounslow Council were informed of the choice of the council leader, Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, at its recent Annual General Meeting.
At least two people present have confirmed the decision to John Dale of the Brentford TV Facebook page, although no official announcement has been made.
The nomination is subject to confirmation by a vote of councillors at the annual meeting of the full council on 27 May.
There have only been three councillors from Chiswick wards to have held this role over the last thirty years and the other two have been Conservatives. Paul Lynch served as Mayor from 2009 to 2010 and Felicity Barwood held the position from 2006-7.
For the 2024–2025 municipal year, Labour councillor Karen Smith from Hounslow South ward has served as Mayor.
The role of Mayor in Hounslow is primarily ceremonial and non-political. It includes chairing council meetings and representing the borough at civic and community events.
Cllr Croft was elected as a councillor for the Chiswick Riverside ward on 5 May 2022 becoming the first Labour councillor in Chiswick in over 20 years. Pat Sterne also represented Chiswick Riverside ward up until 2002.
Since her election, Cllr Croft has been actively involved in various council committees serving as the Chair of the Borough’s Licensing and General Purposes Committee and is a member of the Planning Committee. Additionally, she sits on the Council’s Digital Strategy Board, focusing on enhancing digital accessibility and literacy across the borough .
She is widely seen as an effective councillor and even her political opponents speak highly of her and credit her with working collaboratively for the interests of her ward.
