The proposal to build a community boat house in Brentford has received backing from Active Thames, the partnership programme led by the Port of London Authority (PLA) to encourage physical activity on the tidal Thames and inland waterways.

It is one of 23 projects that will share in £150,000 of funding to encourage increase use of ‘blue space’.

Plans for the boathouse which would be used by Team Keane and the Brentford Masters Rowing Club as well as other water sports clubs in the area are still on the drawing board.

It would be situated opposite Lots Ait near where the River Thames and the River Brent meet by Ferry Quays.

The Brentford Community Boat House is charitable company limited by guarantee specifically to advance the scheme.

It has been formed to build and run a boathouse allowing existing a future community users access to the river Thames at the Ferry Quays site. Its aims is to provide facilities for people who by reason of their youth, age infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances don’t have access to sports on the river.

Sports Manager at the Port of London Authority, Jenny Cooper-Low, said, “We’re really excited to support so many ambitious community projects this year, creating a more inclusive and accessible Thames, which is a core commitment of our Thames Vision 2050 strategy.”

This latest tranche of grants brings the total to £390,000 of Active Thames funding across 50 community clubs in the last three years.
