Local police have arrested and charged a man in connection with thefts from the Tesco store on The Vale, W3, following concerns raised by residents about shoplifting in the area.

The arrest was the result of close collaboration between local officers and store staff, supported by prompt reporting from the community. In a report shared on Met Engage, Police Community Support Officer Jessica Domingos Morais thanked residents for their vigilance, saying their support “plays a vital role in helping us keep our area safe.”

Shoplifting had been highlighted as a priority issue in local surveys. Officers stressed that thefts of this kind can have a substantial negative impact on businesses across London, urging anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to report it immediately. These reports, they said, are invaluable in helping police build a picture of when and where shoplifters operate, enabling them to be in the right place at the right time.

The arrest follows earlier targeted action at the same store. In August, Safer Neighbourhood teams from Southfield and Acton joined forces with Tesco for a three-day operation aimed at reducing thefts, after 24 incidents were reported in just three months.

Uniformed and plain-clothes officers were deployed in and around the premises over three days. During the operation, stolen items were recovered in two separate stop-and-searches, and further offences were prevented. In one case, a suspect attempted to flee but officers prioritised public safety, recovering the stolen goods without pursuit.

The Metropolitan Police are currently developing their New Met for London: Phase 2 strategy, which will guide policing priorities over the next three years. Officers say community input will be crucial in shaping how they respond to local concerns such as shoplifting.
