Acton Street Dancers Through to European Championships

Acton youngsters are preparing to compete in Germany at a prestigious European street dance championship.

Elevate arts UK, based in Acton Gardens are a small, self-funded dance school with a community focus.

Their U16s street dance crew, TRNSCND (Transcend without the vowels!), are Elevate Arts' elite dancers who are gearing up to represent the dance school and the UK in the biggest competition of their career thus far.

They placed 1st at a regional UDO competition, automatically qualifying them to represent the UK at the UDO European Championships in Kalkar, Germany in May 2020.

TRNSCND is formed of eight passionate boys and girls, aged from 10-15, all hailing from working-class backgrounds. They’ve been a crew for two years and currently train for two hours every Saturday in a primary school hall, however there is now a risk they will lose their rehearsal space too and are currently fighting harder than ever to find a new venue so they can make dreams happen

TRNSCND dancer Na’imah, 10 says: “Going to compete in Germany at such a big event will be an amazing experience because there will be lots of top dancers sharing the stage with us so it will inspire and motivate me to practice and dance even more so I can achieve my dreams

Training is versatile including: a thorough warm up, drills in various street styles such as locking, Hip Hop, Popping, House and Breaking (Breakdance), as well as choreography, freestyle and teamwork tasks. 

Train hard, play hard is a key motto at Elevate Arts, but this doesn’t mean the kids are loving every movement with trips and rewards given to the crew for their hard work and focus.

TRNSCND can be seen giving back to the community whenever possible, performing regularly at Acton Carnival and other local events, spreading their infectious spirit.

It hasn’t been an easy journey, crew members have dropped out, been injured, they have endured long train journeys,and learnt not every competition brings home a win, plus the added threat of now losing their rehearsal space. The crew have worked so hard to achieve where they are today. It has taught them perseverance, resilience and adversity, giving them even more fuel to drive their dreams.

The children, parents and Elevate Arts team are excited to be given this opportunity so are currently fundraising and looking for sponsors to help make these childrens’ dreams happen! Elevate Arts are confident TRNSCND can place and bring home a trophy for the UK. They have already managed to raise over £800 of our £4265 target through a variety of fundraising methods and hope to raise even more.
